hardcholl clam (λorconavin movco_wnere ciams live.ine narasneil cian (Ivierceriuriu merce-naria)of America's East and Gulf Coasts prefers salt water, sandy beaches, tidal flats, salt marshes, and seaside bays.ThisI share with the clam.I,too, like these places, and perhapsthat's why I'm partial to clams. \nI've caught clams from New England to the Gulf states, inwilderness refuges and on tidal flats in the shadow of Man-hattan skyscrapers.Clams, like people, are resourceful andadaptable. They can adjust to many situations. But to thrive, they need clean salt water,a bottom substrate of sand andorganic material, vast salt marshes of Spartina and othergrasses that provide life-giving nutrients, and a regular andgentle tidal flow to carry these nutrients to the flats and baybottoms where the clams lie buried, ready to suck in theirlunch through an incurrent siphon. \nI do most of my clamming where I live,on the coast ofVirginia, where, fortunately for me and the clams, some onehundred miles of seaside coastline remain today much aswhen Captain John Smith explored here in 1608.Eighteenbarrier islands line the coast,as well as numerous innerislands that lie between the ocean beaches and the mainland. Most of these islands are protected through either federal orstate ownership, and The Nature Conservancy's VirginiaCoast Reserve is a sanctuary of about forty-five thousandacres on fourteen islands and the mainland. \nThis landscape is a delight for both clams and clammers. Here you can walk a wilderness beach for hours and see noother humans. You could paddle a canoe daily for a lifetimeand still not explore all the bays and waterways. You can walka salt marsh and see no buildings,no roads, none of the so-called improvements we classify as civilization. \nIt is important,I think, that we have such places and thatwe protect them so that our grandchildren and their grand-children will be able to enjoy the values of coastal wildernessas we do.Although the topography differs greatly, thewilderness landscape of the coast provides the same values asa wilderness in the American West or Alaska. There are toofew places today where we can go to be alone in the naturallandscape. \nI find a day spent gathering clams on a remote seasidetidal flat restorative. The important thing about wilderness, whether on the coast or in the mountains of the West,is theeffect it has on the human spirit.Hiking a wilderness beach isdifferent from hiking a resort beach,or even a nationalseash","cbCais1s7EuE7ckQ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCais1s7EuE7ckQ","pdf",3095155,82,"English","#
