A study of more than 95,000 individuals representing over 700 invertebrate types across 10 taxonomic groups compared urban and rural habitats using trapping surveys and measurements. Overall, urban communities contained smaller individuals, suggesting that pre-existing small body sizes confer an advantage for coping with warmer urban conditions linked to the urban heat island effect, rather than cities directly driving size reduction. However, butterflies, moths, and grasshoppers showed a reversed pattern where larger, more mobile species performed better in cities. Habitat fragmentation further favors bigger species that can move more effectively among isolated patches.
