the relationships between agirl and her sisters or stepsisters,as well as a girl and her mother orstepmother,it has had special appeal for women.It is not surprising,therefore,that the two major comparative studies of Cinderella wereboth written by female folklorists.The first of these was the as-tonishing research effort of Marian Roalfe Cox.Entitled Cinderella:Three Hundred and Forty-Five Variants of Cinderella,Catskin,andCap o'Rushes,Abstracted and Tabulated,with a Discussion ofMedieval Analogues and Notes,this impressive gathering of versionsof the tale,further graced by an introduction by Andrew Lang,waspublished by the English Folklore Society in 1893.It was no smalltask to locate so many texts of Cinderella in the days before thecreation of such modern folkloristic aids as tale type indices andmotif-indices,which facilitate the finding of hundreds of versionsfound in print and in folklore archives throughout the Westernworld in a matter of moments.Even today,serious students ofCinderella still have to consult this 535-page pioneering compendium.  \nMore than half a century later,the Swedish folklorist AnnaBirgitta Rooth wrote her doctoral dissertation on the tale under thedirection of Carl Wilhelm von Sydow,one of the founders of thediscipline of folkloristics.Rooth's Cinderella Cycle,published in1951,was based upon some seven hundred
