Review \nThe Tudor period(I485-1603)was one ofthe most eventful in English history.Duringthe one hundred and twenty years that sepa-rate the feudal and religious civil wars of thefifteenth and seventeenth centuries respective-ly,the Crown gained an unparalleled influenceon the country's destinies:it created an in-dependent Anglican Church and gave to a na-,tion that had been isolated politically, fullstatus among the European Powers.UnderHenry VIII(I509-47)and Edward VI(I547to I553)the gentry advanced to the place pre-viously held by the baronial class, which hadbecome practically extinct in the Wars of theRoses. However, social changes and the spiri-tual and religious revolution at home pro-ceeded without marked danger to England’sforeign position, whereas from I555 onwardsthe great antagonism on the Continent wassteadily aggravated as a result of the Counter-Reformation.By her marriage with Philip IIof Spain,Queen Mary(I553-58),the eldestdaughter of Henry VIII,subordinated the grip of Spain as wellas of France. The Union of England withScotland was not yet accomplished, the Scot- \ntish crown being in the Stuart family who hadclose ties with the French throne. With noarmy and very little revenue at her disposal, the English Queen had to rely on a policy ofsupreme caution and adroit evasion in pickingher way between the opposing forces.Onlyby concealing her true intentions and by con-summate diplomacy could she expect to assertherself.Better perhaps than any other womanof her time, which in politics was notoriouslyunscrupulous,Elizabeth had learnt the art ofdissimulation from early childhood;she like-wise was a past master in using the ceaselessmarriage rumours concerning her person tomask her designs. In all her actions she was, however, guided solely by her country's in-terest;she remainedunmarriedbecause shewasunwilling to admit any foreign influence, orfavour one party athome rather than the other. She shared the cool and purely political atti-tude towards Church matters of her Secretaryof State,William Cecil(I520-98),later LordBurghley, who for forty years served as theQueen's chief adviser, loyal but independentin mind, and either a restraining influence ormaking his sovereign hold to a consistentcourse of action. \nIn spite of all her ende","cbCaih5Gm0aOHtY7","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaih5Gm0aOHtY7","pdf",3345961,36,"English","# Coprantine
