captain in a log—whatAmericans have been experiencing on this perilous journey.Upholding democracy is that journey.Just as 19h century sailorsfeared destruction from thunderous icebergs,we fear effects of aNorth Pole melting fast today.Climate,like this presidency,hasforced us to confront more extremes.  \nBut the American governmental system —however battered bycorruption or deceit—provides TIME to recover what has beenstolen:the wonderful fruits of a free country which most of the worldused to admire,or join legally,learning English and working in asociety built mostly by immigrants.
