freedom,toarrive at an awareness of being so that you can clarify your personalityand accept responsibility for your acts.The idea is to become you,gladly become you,appropriate yourself.Very few people generallysucceed.Probably no one in this room is a person.If you intrudeon others or allow them to intrude on you,you are not a person.Howcan you be fully human if you manipulate others to enlarge your ownego?If you are a real person,become your real self,just once beforeyou die,you can count yourself a success.  \nWhen asked to define existentialism,I reply that definitions areunexistential,for the existentialist thinks that to be systematic is tobe unreal.He realizes that almost every extreme indicates an unbalanceand that it is neurotic to try to prove everything by reason alone.Heconsiders reliance on pure intelligence an attempt to be superhumanwhich leads to a fall that makes man less than human.This is thetheme of literature from Aeschylus’Agamemnon to Faulkner's Ab-salom,Absalom!We could learn more philosophy from reading litera-ture than from philosophers,for literature is closer to experience.  \nCan you define any person in a single verbal formula?Aristotledefined man as“rational animal,”but that tells us little about thepeople in this room.Each of us is born with the capacity to be ra-tional,but each of us must seize that rationality for himself.Only byknowing you as individuals can I determine in what way the definitionapplies.The existentialist thinks of man as a human being instead ofas an abstract entity.Since the real\"“you\"is incommunicable and adefinition relies on what is communicable,a definition cannot expressfull reality.Whatever the locale,when you say \"I love you\"and\"Iknow you,\"you refer to a different\"I\"and a different“you\"eachtime.Agreeing with Pascal that the heart has more reasons thanthe reason knows,the existentialist tries to become involved,com-mitted,instead of merely related to what is around him.  \nIn existentialism the whole self is involved—intellect,will,emo-tions,body.The existentialist tries to get away from pure speculativethought.He views life as an actor rather than as a spectator;he knowsthrough sympathy and will as well as through his intellect.A Catholicpsychologist,Rudolph Allers,said the people with the most insight,thepeople who know what it means to
