published in the\"VanNostrand Science Series.\"It is a treatment of chimney-draftonly.Other than this,the only book of any pretension is thatof Bancroft's,an English book,published in 1885,and nolonger obtainable.Thus it may be seen that there is no bookwhich contains the latest practice in regard to the theory anddesigning of chimneys as built in the United States.  \nThe Transactions of the engineering societies and volumesof technical periodicals do not give very much that is of valueexcepting,however,the“Engineering News”and“En-gineering Record,\"to whom,with Mr.Henry C.Meyer,Jr.,I am especially grateful for courtesies extended.  \nWhenever any extracts are made use of they are creditedas far as possible to their source,and my thanks are tenderedfor the use of same,and to Mr.F.E.Idell for many valuablesuggestions and criticisms.  \nThe absence of data on this important subject has inducedme to prepare this treatise,and if it meets with the samesuecess that attended my
