Through foreword and preface material, the work argues that performing a rite-like play helps relieve inhibitions, releases emotions, and supports personal growth, enabling children—including difficult or problem children—to work through fear, shyness, excess energy, and inner failings. it is about something forwhich I think Drama—the Theatre—should exist.A playhouse is not onlya place where one passes an evening of pleasure with one's friends—a sortof jolly party. It is something far more significant than that.Acting is theart which is common to all of us (everybody can act—more or less !).It isin a way a curative art—also an art which can help to build human beingsinto something better and more understanding than they are by nature—to build them into sensitive creatures able to feel the sorrows and joys ofothers as their own. Also by incarnating themselves as actors in otherpeople's lives they can rid themselves of—throw off from themselves—thethings they like least in their natures, and so often only recognize in otherpeople. So,by living in the lives of others and with an eye and mind im-aginatively tuned and objective, they may effect real cures of their ownfailings. \nNow,Mr.Slade has worked this out in a very able way;he has discoveredhow,in children, much may be helped and conquered by the simple perform-ing of a Rite—a Play.He has found in the Play a releasing--a looseningas it were of inhibitions, and many good results have come about with so-called difficult and problem children by the very fact of their being able to“make a play”,and work off sometimes excess of high spirits and temper, sometimes excess of shyness and fear of others;all sorts of inhibited thingsare brought to light, put into an art form and cast off,or resolved, afterwhich something may be built anew for them—a more free and happy life. \nWhy this book has excited me so much is because what Peter Slade hasdone for children I believe the Theatre should be doing for grown-up children—for ordinary human beings. There is profound teaching in this book onthe service of the Art of the Play. \nThis is the first time that anyone has perceived, let alone written on,Play and Drama in so full and all-embracing a manner.Peter Slade haswritten one of the really important books of our time, and reveals himselfas one of the great specialists on children and drama. In addition, his bookwill have a very real influence on the theatre of the future. \nSYBIL THORNDIKE \n5 Drama.Whena publisher courageously invited me to do so,it seemed that perhaps thetime had come. \nThose readers who really know and love Children may understand thisbook.I beg that lovers of theatre will remember that I am one also, andwill not react emotionally without due consideration. My task was to pro-vide notes on the observation of thousands of Children during the lasttwenty-five years or so,in this country and abroad, and to add some conclu-sions upon what I saw. \nGroups of teachers and individual doctors and specialists in various partsof the world, who are kind enough to keep in touch with me,have advised onwhat questions, remarks and answers to include, having regard to what intheir opinion would clarify the subject. \nThis rather considerable amount of material has been edited andarranged by Mr.Brian Way,a pioneer with Children and theatr","cbCaivND5DuY85ps","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivND5DuY85ps","pdf",23767997,426,"English","# Foreword\n# Preface\n#
