Please delete these notes before printing  \nChicken Care Book 3: Increasing the Number of Chickens  \nSelection of Hens for Reproduction  \nNative hens are excellent for the incubation of eggs and production of chicks. It is not necessary to purchase chickens from an incubator or expensive food for them from the market. Hens will grow up in the fields without needing much care-they eat insects and grasses which they find when they scratch the ground.  \nA broody hen ruffles its plumage and makes a different sort of hen-noise and remains on the nest without going out into the fields. These signs should be observed for two or three days before using the hen to incubate eggs. The best hens will cover the eggs with their wings whilst they are on the nest.  \nWhen you are looking for laying hens it is good to measure them. Measure the part which is underneath the tail between the bones of the legs. If you can only put two fingers into the space it is not a laying hen. But if you can put three or four fingers into the space it is a good laying bird. After it has had its first chicks you will know whether or not it is a good mother.  \nA hen should lay between twenty and twenty-five eggs before it is ready to incubate.  \nSelection of Eggs for Incubation  \nThe best eggs must be chosen carefully. The eggs should be of a good shape, should not be flattened, nor have two yolks (these are usually bigger eggs) . There should be no cracked or weak shells.
