But his short fiction,particularly his prison fiction,writtenduring the first phase of his literary career,has been largely neglected--perhaps,in part,because his novels have been commercially more success-fu1.Written in the 1930s and the 1940s,Himes'.prison works--tenstories,a novella,and a novel--deserve recognition also because theydemonstrate a wide range of themes,character types,moods,and stylesthat were later developed in his career.  \nA review of scholarly books and dissertations reveals that theexisting criticism on Himes!prison fiction has been limited to a selectfew,usually,to those Esquire stories that have received some criticalacclaim.Yet,Himes'prison stories are his earliest and they show thematrix of his imaginative vision.  Only four critics have mentionedHimes'prison fiction;and two of these have omitted the three mostimportant works from Abbott's Monthly magazine.  There.is no in-depthstudy of the prison fiction.  This study examines this body of work toshow how it is crucial to the understanding of Himes'later accomplish-ments as a writer of short fiction and as a novelist.  \nStructurally,this dissertation consists of five chapters.  Chap-ter One introduces Himes,accounts for the general lack of concern forhis prison writings of the 1930s,and places him within the context ofan emerging prison literature in the 1960s.  Chapter Two provides ashort biography by discussing Himes'incarceration which providedmaterials for his early works.  Chapter Three examines Himes'ten  \nprison stories--and a novella--to demonstrate that they are the seedof his vision--shaped by his prison experiences at the Ohio StatePenitentiary,and enhanced throughout his.literary career as a writer.Chapter Four deals with Himes¹prison novel,Cast the First Stone,toshow how it is a culmination of all that he had experienced since hisimprisonment,and to reveal how parts of it are similar to three ofhis short stories published in Esquire and Opportunity between 1934and 1941.
