The schedule covers core chemistry domains including stoichiometry, atoms and molecules, gases, condensed matter, thermodynamics, equilibria, acids and bases, electrochemistry, and problem-solving strategies across content areas. It also emphasizes test-day practice with a timed MCAT-style exam, plus final coverage of physical and biological science material taught during the six-week course.","The Syllabus and Course Content of the Chemistry Portion of Your Course \nInstructor: Dave Laude \nClass meeting time and location: Welch 2.224 from 10 till 11:30 each day \nContact: e-‐mail to dalaude@mail. utexas.edu \nOffice Hours: From 11:30 till 12:30 in GEA 105 each day after class (starting Friday) \nChemistry Daily Schedule—note there are two 30 to 45 minute lectures each day. \nJune 2 \nSession 1: Exam Preparation—math skills, study techniques, test taking \nSession 2: High School Chemistry—stiochiometry, descriptive chemistry, chemical reactions \nJune 3: \nSession 3: The Atom—quantum mechanics, electronic configurations, periodic table trends \nSession 4: The Molecule—bonding and chemical structures \nJune 6: \nSession 5: Gases— kinetic molecular theory, gas law calculations, kinetics \nSession 6: Condensed Matter—intermolecular forces, properties of liquids and solids \nJune 7 \nSession 7: Thermodynamics—chemical systems, state functions, heat and work, spontaneity \nSession 8: Equilibria—phase changes, colligative properties, law of mass action, LeChatelier \nJune 8 \nSession 9: Mixing—theory of mixing, solution concentration, solubility equilbria \nSession 10: Acids and Bases—theory, equilibria and calculations \nJune 9 \nSession 11: Electrochemistry—redox reactions, electrochemical cells, cell current and potential \nSession 12: Passages—strategies for working problems across content areas \nTwo chances to test your knowledge in real testing environment. \nA practice version of the chemistry portion of the MCAT will be given on Thursday, June 9th from 7 till 8 pm. Right afterward from 8 till 9 pm Dr. Laude will work through the exam answering questions and offering strategy tips. \nThe final exam for this course will be an additional MCAT-‐style exam covering the physical science and biological science content taught during the six weeks. It will be given from 9 am until noon on Saturday, July 9th. \nTHREE INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT THINGS TO UNDERSTAND ABOUT A COURSE WITH THIS STRUCTURE \nYou have been given far more material than you can manage in a week. Don’t fall apart trying to work every problem and watch every video. My web site isn’t going away. \nGet organized. The only problems worth studying are the ones on a test that you don’t know how to do. Random disorganized study will actually make things worse. \nYou will get out of this course what you put into it. This is a platitude but sadly, it is true. \nLecture 1: 10 Calculator-‐Free Math Rules to Live By \n1. Knowing some of the basic root and natural log values is a good thing. \n2.5 = 1 .4 3.5 = 1 .7 ln 0 doesn’t exist ln 1 = 0 ln 2 = .7 ln 2 .7 = 1 \n2. Logarithmic identities are your friend. Why? Because log (a/b) = log a – log b and ln(ab) = ln a + ln b. \n3. Knowing a few trig values won’t kill you. This is all you need \nsin 0o = cos 90 o = 0, sin 30 o = cos 60 o = 0.5, sin 45 o = cos 45 o = 0.7, sin 60 o = cos 30 o = 0.86, sin 90 o = cos 0o = 1 (do you see the square root pattern?) \n4. Exponent math abounds in physical science tests. MOST calculations involve exponents. You should be happy because exponents exist to make arithmetic easier. Why? They turn powers into multiplications and multiplications into additions. For example, (10-‐3 x 10-‐7)0.5 = 10-‐5. \n5. Estimates are excellent. You should get to where you don’t need to use a pencil to do your calculations—it wastes huge amounts of time. So Avagadro’s number is 1 x 1024, pi = 3, a Faraday is 1 x 105. And every other number in a calculation should be simplified little bits at a time. If you see a 2 . 3 and a 4 .7 in the denominator, divide by 10 . If you see a 6 .4 in the numerator and a 5 .9 in the denominator, they cancel out. Trust me. \n6. Bounding the rounding. If you round up a couple of numbers, then you know that the answer must be a little less than the estimate. So 2 .98 x 17 .75 = a number a little less than 60 or a little less than 54 depending on the amount of rounding. \n","cbCaic8oneklA8v2","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaic8oneklA8v2","pdf",61331,1,2,"English","en",105,"# Course Schedule\n## Daily Chemistry Sessions\n## Key Course Principles\n## Lecture 1: 10 Calculator-Free Math Rules to Live By\n## Calculator-Free Estimation and Bounds","[{\"question\":\"What is the daily session format for this Chemistry portion course?\",\"answer\":\"Each day includes two lectures of about 30 to 45 minutes.
