We review physical and chemical principles. We then go on to atomic structure based on quantum mechanics, and study atomic properties, trends in the periodic table, and chemical bonding in molecules and coordination compounds with an emphasis on structure and shape. The course concludes with the structure and properties of inorganic, organic, and biological acids, bases, and salts. Biological and environmental examples are used to illustrate the central role chemistry plays in the world around us. Prerequisites are high school chemistry and 3½ years of high school mathematics. Math at the level of Math 3A/31A is a corequisite. \nChem 14A counts toward GE requirement “Foundations of Scientific Inquiry” as 4 units. \nGroup activities, online interaction, collaborative support, in-person interaction, learning , and developing problem solving skills, are emphasized in my courses. \nLECTURES: See online schedule. \nOFFICE HOURS: I answer questions, etc. , on Chemistry Community seven days a week (including Sunday mornings 􋇤􋈐 ) and at the end of class. Ask questions on Chemistry Community. \nCourse related information is available at [https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/](https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/ and)[ and](https://lavelle.chem.ucla.edu/ and) on Bruin Learn. \nStudent questions can be posted any day, any time to the Chemistry Community Forum. I created and maintain the Chemistry Community Forum. All technical problems must be sent [to](to voh@chem.ucla.edu)[ ](to voh@chem.ucla.edu)[voh@chem.ucla.edu](to voh@chem.ucla.edu). \nTA (TEACHING ASSISTANTS) AND UA (UNDERGRADUATE ASSISTANTS) : To be announced. \nTA Discussion Sections: Attend the TA discussion section you are enrolled in. \nTA office hours and UA peer learning sessions: When schedules are finalized , they will be posted online. You may attend any TA office hours and any UA peer learning sessions. \nAttend as many as possible. These are great for small group and one-on-one assistance. \nCOURSE SUPPORT: \nOnline materials (Yes) \nTeaching Assistants (Yes) \nMany office hours every week Many step-up sessions every week Many workshops every week \nClass lectures (Yes) Discussion sections (Yes) \nOnline Forum and Q&A database 24/7 (Yes) \nUndergraduate Assistants (Yes) \nMany peer learning sessions every week \nQ&A online discussion on Chemistry Community 24/7 Many review sessions \nI organize 43 hours of real-time (synchronous) sessions every week (in-person and Zoom) to support all students. In addition to individual Q&A 24/7 on Chemistry Community. \n*TEXTBOOK (see page 6) : Chemical Principles, The Quest for Insight, 8th Ed. The inclusive access** eBook is part of Achieve and is available on Bruin Learn. The same textbook is used in Chem 14A and 14B and the eBook can be downloaded to 4 devices (2 computers & 2 mobile devices), and used for 4 years. eBook offline access is very useful. Students will find the hyperlinked eBook to videos, etc. , very useful and Achieve is required for submitting online assignments, accessing the excellent hyperlinked eBook, etc. Achieve Assignments can/must only be accessed on Bruin Learn. \nAll required and recommended written course materials that impose a monetary cost upon students in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry are approved by a departmental Course Materials Committee. \nCh em 1 4 A Dr .
