S. Owens, Ph.D. \n[owens@chem.utah.edu](owens@chem.utah.edu) \nIntroduction. This is the second semester of general chemistry especially for science majors, engineering majors, and students of all disciplines who plan to pursue professional degrees in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, occupational therapy, optometry, and physical therapy. All of these fields of study depend in some way or another on understanding the atomic and molecular nature of matter. \nA lot of General Chemistry I focuses on the atomic and molecular nature of matter and the electronic structure of atoms as the bases for chemical reactivity and physical properties. In General Chemistry II, we will build on these ideas in a study of the speeds of chemical reactions and dynamic equilibrium and detailed studies of acids, bases, solubility, thermodynamics, redox reactions, electrochemistry, coordination complexes, and nuclear reactions. \nCHEM 1225 is the companion 1-credit lab course. Students are not required to take this course and CHEM 1225 at the same time, but it is recommended. \nPrerequisites: C-grade or better in CHEM 1210 or an AP Chemistry Exam score of 4+ \nCourse structure. This is an asynchronous section of general chemistry: all the course material can be accessed through Canvas, and there are no class meetings at all, whether in-person or virtual. The asynchronous nature of this section makes it especially well-suited to students with work and/or family schedules that prevent regular class attendance and who are strongly self-motivated and able to work independently through most if not all the course material. This section has an inflexible framework of weekly assignment and exam deadlines, and it is not the kind of“online” course that can be passed with minimal effort. You should expect to spend at least 12 hours every week working through and studying the course material. \nDo not overload your schedule with this section just because it is convenient, and do not take this section if you have trouble meeting deadlines. Especially if you learn better through lots of interaction with instructors, teaching assistants, and peers, you should take a section of general chemistry with class meetings several times each week, even if you must wait a semester or two because of schedule conflicts. \nCourse materials and resources: \nSections of Chemistry, 2nd ed. by OpenStax are provided in PDF on each lesson page in Canvas. ALEKS. Electronic access is automatically available through Day 1 Access. \nStuff you need to use: a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet; internet; a scientific calculator. A tablet with a writing implement, [e.g. an](e.g. an) iPad with an Apple Pencil, and a note-taking app, e.g PDF Expert or Notability, are strongly recommended. \nEverything else for this course is either on Canvas or linked directly from it. All class announcements will be posted on Canvas as an Announcement. You are responsible for all information contained in them. \n\\Course goals. By the end of the course, each student should have: \n• an ability to set and reach personal goals through effective time management and productive study habits \n• an ability to meet consistent deadlines \n• an ability to think and ask questions in a scientific way \n• strong analytical skills \n• problem-solving prowess that can be applied to any technical field \n• confidence earned through weekly preparation for meaningful assessments \n• readiness for further studies that require background knowledge in general chemistry \nThe overarching course goals above will be reached through mastering some specific content areas of general chemistry. These are too numerous to mention in a course syllabus but can be found on the course Canvas. \nOffice Hours: TBD \nFeel free to contact me by email for questions at [owens@chem.utah.edu.
