For a high-level overview of the sequencing of activities to construct the Doncaster house and the appropriate chapter references, review Figure 6.1. This figure uses a Gantt bar chart to indicate the approximate durations of activities in working days. The chart is intended to provide an understanding of activities and the sequencing and duration required to construct the Doncaster house along with the appropriate chapter references for more information. Chapters follow the sequencing of the construction process with some minor variations. When you are reviewing construction drawings for information regarding the foundation, it is important to fully understand the principles and materials behind the information you are reviewing. This chapter provides a background for the types of footings and foundations, code references, materials, and methods of construction. The chapter also includes important points to watch for when interpreting and applying information from the drawings to the actual construction of the house or addition. Errors made on the foundation can be catastrophic, and carry through the entire project, directly affecting its success; therefore, review foundation (basement) drawings and relevant \nspecifications carefully, keeping in mind site conditions and time of year, while planning ahead to how the rest of the building will integrate with the foundation. \nFOOTINGS \nFootings provide the base for the building. All of the loads imposed on the building are distributed to the footings. The two types of loads imposed on a structure are: \n• Live loads: These are loads that are not part of the building structure and that change; for example, people, furniture, and composite snow loads (combination of snow and rain) are examples of live loads. (Note that OBC categorizes snow and rain as an environmental load.) \n• Dead loads: These loads are part of the building structure and do not change. Walls, floors, block and concrete foundation walls, the roof, and brick are examples of dead loads. The weight of both dead and live loads is in turn distributed through the footings to the soil/ground (bearing surface) . You will improve your understanding of structures \nand your ability to interpret construction drawings if you think of all of the weight (load) from the building, both live and dead loads, being distributed through the structure and eventually being transferred through the \n122 Understanding Construction Drawings for Housing and Small Buildings \nFIGURE 6.1 \nDoncaster house schedule using 164 working days to construct the home. Follow the sequencing of tasks to better picture the construction process. Actual duration and sequencing may vary depending on time constraints and availability of labour. Note the chapter references where more information about activities may be found. The textbook chapters follow the flow of construction from chapters 5 to 13. \nChapter 6 Footings, Foundations, Dampproofing, and Waterproofing 123 \nFIGURE 6.1 (continued) \n124 Understanding Construction Drawings for Housing and Small Buildings \nfootings to the soil.
