Examining the mystery genre, this article asserts that there is significant value in popular literature and series books for building a reading life. The genre of mystery fiction, for example, can build reading interest and engagement. Highlighting recommended contemporary mystery fiction enables readers to identify new works to consider. This article treats mystery fiction as a tool for literacy education and demonstrates the usefulness of book award lists as oneway of discovering books and authors. Suggestions of current mystery books and authors with potential appeal for tweens, teens, and the educators who work with them provide options for independent reading. \nKeywords: independent reading, voluntary reading, mystery and detective fiction, series books, book awards, literacy \nWelcome to a new golden age of mysteries. In 2025, many people of all ages can enjoy mysteries, including books, detective shows, thrillers, puzzles, and games. Such experiences can be useful for the mind as well as entertaining. Mysteries require areader to look closely for necessary clues. The genre builds curiosity and suspense while making the reader an active participant. Mystery books deserve to be available for independent reading, and some have potential for curriculum inclusion. \nThis article argues for the mystery genre as a valuable contribution to literacy development and explores titles reflecting some current trends in mysteries for tween, or preteen, and teen readerships. I provide recommendations of some exemplary, representative books chosen by qualitative assessment based on critical judgment and wide reading in the genre. An effort is made to avoid spoilers by not revealing too much about the plotlines and resolutions that are pivotal to the mystery reading experience. \nTexas Association for Literacy Education Yearbook, Volume 12: Tall City TALE: Inspiring Literacy Everywhere \n©2025 Texas Association for Literacy Education \nISSN: 2374-0590 online \nSuggestions for the selection and evaluation of mystery books are also given. \nThe Need for Independent Reading \nIn the English Language Arts and Reading Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (ELAR TEKS), strand one on foundational language skills includes a standard across grade levels highlighting the skill to “selfselect text and read independently for a sustained period of time”(Texas Education Agency, 2019, section 110, p. 8) . The skill to choose texts and to concentrate on reading requires practice. Strand two on comprehension skills includes a gradespanning standard to “establish purpose for reading assigned and self-selected text,” and strand three on response skills requires students to “describe personal connections to a variety of sources, including selfselected texts”(Texas Education Agency, 2019, section 110, pp.10-11) . The standards validate independent reading and student choice, which can help support reading motivation and authentic engagement. \nThe ability to choose texts and to read in uninterrupted intervals requires time and practice throughout all grades. The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE, 2019) policy statement stresses the value of this critical instructional method: “Effective independent reading practices include time for students to read, access to books that represent a wide range of characters and experiences, and support within a reading community that includes teachers and students”(NCTE) . Independent reading requires time, access, and support. \nChoice in reading materials can enhance reading motivation. Motivation leads to more reading, which supports proficiency and lifelong literacy.
