…..CHAPTER 4 \n# ILLUSTRATIONSON DESIGNOF PRECASTCONCRETEBUILDINGS\n\n4.1 Introduction \n## 4.212-Storey Office Block\n\n4.3 Residential Block \n# CHAPTER 4:ILLUSTRATIONS ON DESIGN OF PRECAST CONCRETE BUILDINGS\n\n4.1 Introduction \nThe principles and methods of design of precast concrete members and their connections asexpressed in earlier chapters are demonstrated in this chapter by the design of a 12-storey officeblock and a 30-storey residential apartment. \nThe structural system of the office block is based on skeletal frame consisting of a framework ofcolumns, beams and slabs. The skeletal frames are the most common structural system due to theadvantage of greater flexibility in the building space arrangement and utilisation. They are also themost demanding of all precast structures because of the greater complexity of interplay of forcesand movements of the structural components as compared to cast in-situ structures. It is importantto understand the physical effects of these forces and how they are being transferred through thecompleted structure. \nThe residental apartment is constructed using cast in-situ prestressed flat plates and precast loadbearing walls. It is an efficient structural system in this type of building as compared with a totalprecast solution. \nIn the following pages, the specimen calculations for the design of precast columns, beams, staircases, walls and their connections have been selected to illustrate as many as possible of the types ofdesign in a building project for which calculations may have to be prepared. The drawings andcalculations provided are illustrative examples and they are not intended to be sufficient to construct,or to obtain the necessary authority to construct,a building of the type and size considered. \nTypical production details or shop drawings are also shown for each type of the precast componentsbeing considered. The layout and presentation are for illustrative purposes and willbe differentbetween manufacturers. \n4.2 12-Storey Office Block \n## 1. Project Description\n\nThe building is a 12-storey office block in a mix commercial development comprising carparks, shopping malls and service apartments. \nA typical floor of the building measuring 24mx72m with 8m building grids in both directionsis shown in Figure 4.1.The design floor-to-floor height is 3.6 m.Staircases, lift cores andother building services such as toilets,AHU,M&E risers are located at each end of the floorwhich are to be cast in-situ. \n## 2.
