The material explains how cross functional flowcharts differ from standard flowcharts by using two dimensions. It provides guidance on creating charts in Visio, including choosing orientation and direction, using swimlanes as containers for ordered shapes, adding swimlane labels, inserting swimlanes, and managing related swimlane behavior. It also covers adding phases with separator shapes and formatting the resulting cross functional chart using built-in themes and manual lane styling.",{"@graph":14,"@context":72},[15,34,55],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/technology/","Technology",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/chapter-17-cross-functional-flowcharts/657223/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/chapter-17-cross-functional-flowcharts/657223.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Elsa","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-30","2026-10-26",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":30},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",{"@type":56,"mainEntity":57},"FAQPage",[58,64,68],{"name":59,"@type":60,"acceptedAnswer":61},"Why use a cross functional flowchart instead of a standard flowchart?","Question",{"text":62,"@type":63},"A standard flowchart cannot clearly show who is responsible unless you add extra text boxes or one department owns the whole process. For example, you can depict how a new product is developed \nwithin the company, and how the different departments are involved in this process. The fact that you have two dimensions to a cross functional flowchart differentiates it from other flowcharts. \n4 5 \n1 \n2 \n3 \n6 \n\n| 􀀔 | The title bar appears at the top of the flowchart by default. |\n| --- | --- |\n| 􀀕 | Each swimlane represents a different department or functional unit within an organisation which you can identify by modifying the label. The swimlanes can appear with a horizontal orientation (as they are above) where the steps tend to flow down and across through the flowchart or with a vertical orientation where the steps tend to move left and right in a horizontal manner.\u003Cbr>Note that a swimlane is a container that helps you to manage ordered sets of shapes. Like other containers in Visio, the swimlane and all shapes added to it are treated as a single unit – that is, if you move a swimlane, all shapes within it will also move. |\n| 􀀖 | The Connectors indicate the direction of the work flow. |\n| 􀀗 | Shapes from the Basic Flowchart Shapes stencil depict the steps of the process in a cross functional flowchart. |\n| 􀀘 | If you want to indicate phases in the process, you can use the Separator shape. This adds a heading in the phase bar and displays a separator through the swimlanes. |\n| 􀀙 | Built-in themes and styles can be applied to the flowchart or you can manually format the colour of each swimlane independently. In this case, we’ve applied the Module theme colours and Button theme effects to the flowchart but have retained the default style. |\n\nCREATING A CROSS FUNCTIONAL FLOWCHART \nVisio includes a Cross Functional Flowchart template which lets you illustrate how a process (such as manufacturing a product) flows from start to finish and how the responsibility for the \nvarious steps flows through different functional units (such as departments in a company) . You can select a vertical or horizontal orientation for the chart. \nTry This Yourself: \nBefore starting this exercise \nensure no files are open in Visio \n􀀔 \n􀀕 \n􀀖 \n􀀗 \n􀀘 \nClick on the File tab, then click on Flowchart under Template Categories , click on Cross-Functional Flowchart and then click on [Create] \nA new default cross functional flowchart with two horizontal swimlanes, title bar and phase bar will be created \nClick on the CrossFunctional Flowchart tab to see the relevant commands \nClick on Orientation in the Arrange group and select Vertical \nThe swimlanes will appear vertically on the page and their labels will move to the top of each swimlane. \nYou can reverse the direction of the chart if desired \nClick on Direction in the Arrange group and select Right to Left \nClick on Undo twice to reverse the Direction and Orientation \n1 \n4 \nFor Your Reference \nTo create a cross functional flowchart: \n1.
