For example, we have boxes of cereals, boxes of chocolates or boxes of pizzas which are in the form of cuboids, tins of food which are in the shape of cylinders, the dice which we use in board games which are in the form of cubes, the pyramids of Egypt and so on. \nCuboid \nSurface Area \nThe total surface area of a solid is the sum of all the faces ofthe solid. \nFor example, industries make use of total surface area to ensure that they have enough amount of packaging for cereal boxes, washing powder boxes, boxes of juice and so on. We also make use of surface area, for example, to ensure that we have enough wrapping paper to wrap a gift. \nWrapping paper for gifts/chocolate \nGlass used for aquarium \nCube \nReal-life Examples ofa Cube \nA cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges. \nNote: We say one vertex but many vertices. \nFace \nNets \nNets are 2-D shapes that are formed by unfolding or unbending 3-D shapes. \nNet of a cube \n\n| | | | |\n| --- | --- | --- | --- |\n| | | | |\n| | | | |\n\nLink to check net ofa cube \n[https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Cube-Nets/](https://www.nctm.org/Classroom-Resources/Illuminations/Interactives/Cube-Nets/) \n[This is an interactive link which shows how the net is closed to form a cube. Find the length of the edge of the cube. \nSolution: \nTotal surface area of cube = 864 􀜿􀝉 2 \nArea of one face of cube = 864 􀜿􀝉 2 ÷ 6 = 144 􀜿􀝉 2 Length of cube = √144 􀜿􀝉 = 12 􀜿􀝉 \nExample 3: \nA cubical box of length 2.1 m is to be made with cardboard. Cardboard is sold by square metres, with 1 􀝉 2 costing Rs 20. \n(a) What is the total area of cardboard to be purchased to make the box? \n(b) Find the total cost of cardboard purchased. \nSolution: \n(a) Total surface area of cube \n= 6􀝈2 \n= (6 × 2.1 × 2. 1)","cbCaihL3NVFUyejY","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihL3NVFUyejY","pdf",1299816,22,"English","# Learning Outcomes\n## Understanding 3-D shapes and real-life examples\n## Nets of a cube and cuboid\n## Surface area of a cube\n## Worked examples: surface area of cubes\n## Example problems involving cubical boxes","[{\"question\":\"What should learners be able to do by the end of Chapter 13 Part 1?\",\"answer\":\"Learners should understand nets of a cube and cuboid, calculate total surface area using face areas, apply formulas for volume of cubes and cuboids, and solve related problems.\"},{\"question\":\"How do you find the total surface area of a cube or cuboid from its net?\",\"answer\":\"Total surface area is the sum of the areas of all the faces shown in the nets of the cube or cuboid.\"},{\"question\":\"How many faces, edges, and vertices does a cube have?\",\"answer\":\"A cube has 6 faces, 8 vertices, and 12 edges.\"}]","Chapter 13 - Surface Area Part 1 - Surface Area | PDF",1789743400,55]
