11 Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing Plan \nExtracted from Kitchen & Bath Drawing: Documents, Drafting, and Presentation, 3d ed. \n© 2023 \nNKBA \nCHAPTER 11 \nMECHANICAL, ELECTRICAL & PLUMBING PLAN \nIncluded in the set of kitchen and bath construction plans are the mechanical, electrical & plumbing plan (or sometimes called a “MEP Plan”, formerly referred to as a mechanical plan) . The mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plan illustrates the placement of mechanical systems, plumbing fixtures, equipment, communication systems, and fire and life-safety systems. mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans may be prepared by the kitchen and bath designer as a single (or blended) mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plan of the designed space with all mechanical, electrical (including lighting, switches and switching) and plumbing equipment illustrated on one plan. This type of plan is unique to kitchen and bath design. \nFigure 11.1 A Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing plan. \nIt is important for the kitchen and bath designer to draw and understand mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans. As the designer creates a design, they may need to determine whether there is any flexibility in the \nPage 201 \n© COPYRIGHT 2023 National Kitchen & Bath Association \nplumbing supply line, drain, or venting locations. It is not likely that the entire heating and air conditioning system will be illustrated, but the locations of supply and return vents will be identified and the designer should be aware of where the ducting is within the overall structure and how it will affect the design. \nTable 11.1 Typical Types of Industry Mechanical-type Plans \n\n| Plan Name | Description |\n| --- | --- |\n| FIRE &\u003Cbr>LIFE-SAFETY PLAN | Prepared by the interior designer or architect. Typically used in commercial interior design; but may be required in residential, depending on the jurisdiction. It illustrates exit signs, sprinkler locations, and the path of egress travel distances in addition to identifying building code-compliance research and analysis. Furnishings (including cabinets) are shown. Typically the first plan following the title sheet. |\n| MECHANICAL ( HVAC) PLAN | Prepared by mechanical engineers, architects and mechanical contractors. Designers need to be able to interpret the basic HVAC plans for the coordination of light fixtures, registers, grilles, thermostats, and other items that interface with building systems. The designer should understand the basic layout of the HVAC systems and consider that furniture, furnishings, and miscellaneous equipment should not obstruct the operation of the system. |\n| PLUMBING PLAN | Prepared by the plumbing contractor or mechanical engineer. Plumbing plans are prepared to show how pressurized fresh water and gravity-drained wastes are routed through the building. These two separate systems are called the “freshwater (hot and cold) supply system,” and the “drain (sanitary) , waste, and vent ( DWV) system.”These system plans are coordinated with the other structural and architectural plans to ensure proper location, operation, and protection of the plumbing systems. Small residential projects do not require a plumbing plan. |\n| POWER, DATA & COMMUNICATION PLAN | Typically used in commercial interior design. Separates electrical, lighting and communication systems from lighting and switching on a separate drawing sheet. Furnishings and cabinets are shown. |\n| POWER AND LIGHTING PLAN | Combines only electrical, lighting and switching together on one sheet. Does not show ventilation, ducting, or heating. Furnishings and cabinets are shown. |\n| LIGHTING PLAN | A Lighting Plan (sometimes called a “Lighting and Switching Plan”) shows the planned location of all light fixtures, light switches and connected switching patterns for the designed space. Furnishings and cabinets are shown. |\n| REFLECTED CEILING PLAN | Reflects upon the ceiling plane and often described as placing a mirror at the ceiling.
