Sal Carter \n# Chapter 1.\n\nVisitors kept arriving, bringing flowers or plates of food. There were aunts and uncles, including a few thatTommie hardly knew,to which he had to say hello. He didn't want to stay any longer and quietly slippedaway to his bedroom. \nHe sat on the floor with his head resting on his knees and his arms around his legs.He was trying hard not tocry, but the tears kept coming. He felt as if a big sadness was pushing hard on his chest. He sniffed loudly andit made him even sadder because he thought of Mommy saying:“Don't sniff Tommie, use your \nhandkerchief.\"He knew he’d never hear her say those words again.Mommy was dead, and he would neversee her again. \nHe heard his bedroom door open quietly, but he really didn't want anyone to see him cry,so he buried hishead deeper into his knees. Then he felt a hand on his shoulder and a dog licking his face.He peeped underhis arm and saw a scruffy pair of yellow takkies, and he knew who it was.Jamie from next door croucheddown next to him and said,“Hi,Tommie.Topsy and I have come to cheer you up.We know how sad youmust be.\" \nTommie put his arm around Topsy and she looked up at him with her big brown eyes. She had the softestcurly hair;Jamie said her father was a Cocker Spaniel and her mother a poodle.Mommy said she was aSpoodle, but Daddy said she was a Cockerpoo.Tommie thought Cockerpoo sounded better. \n“I don't mind if you cry,Tommie.I cried and cried and cried when my Gran died.Look,Topsy is trying to dryyour tears.\" \nTommie was amazed because he'd never seen Jamie cry, even when he fell off his bike.He thought when youwere eight, you didn't cry anymore. Then he remembered seeing his dad cry, which made him feel evensadder. \n“You know my dad cries quite a lot too.Did you know that grownups cry,Jamie?” \n“Grownups get sad too,Tommie. My Mom and Dad cried when my Gran died.My big brother also cried.”Tommie couldn't imagine Jamie's brother,Josh, ever crying. \nJamie said,\"I saved this for you.\"He put his hand in his pocket and took out a KitKat.It was a little squashed, but Tommie unwrapped it and noticed how Jamie was watching him, licking his lips. \n\"We'll share it\",Tommie said while taking a bite. \nJamie shook his head,\"No,it's for you because you're my best friend.\"It felt so nice to be called a best friendthat he insisted Jamie have the last bite.Sharing felt good, and for a few moments he didn't feel so sad. \nJamie finished licking his fingers and said,\"I really liked your mom.I'm going to miss her too.\" \nThen the sadness came again like a thump in the chest.Trying hard not to start crying again,he asked,“Willwe ever see her again? Not even on my birthday?\"He stroked Topsy's soft head. She snuggled up to him andJamie said,\"I'm afraid not,Tommie.I never saw Gran again, but sometimes I feel she's around somewhere;she smelled of lavender and I was sure I could smell it.Or I thought I could hear her humming her favouritesong. So,they never really leave us.You just can't see or touch them.\" \nTommie tried hard to remember what Mommy smelt like, biscuits of some sort,he thought, and shewhistled a lot but never hummed. \nJamie stood up.\"All the visitors have gone;I better go home to supper.\" \n特 \nTommie suddenly panicked!\"Who will be making supper for me now Mommy's gone?\"he asked Jamie. \n“Your gran's a pretty good cook, and your dad can make a mean pizza,so you aren't going to starve. And youcan always come and eat with us.\"Jamie laughed.\"Come Topsy, time for your supper.See you tomorrow,Tommie.\" \nTommie remembered he had to feed Casper, his cat.In the kitchen,Gran was busy chopping away atsomething and lovely smells were coming from the stove.Casper meowed a greeting and rubbed himselfagainst Tommie as if to say hurry up and feed me.Gran put down her knife and gave Tommie a hug. \n\"It's so nice I can rely on you to feed the animals,Tommie. One thing less for me to do.\" \nWhen Gran let him go,Tommie asked,“Gran, who will look after me if you go away?” \n\"If l ever go away,it will only","cbCaihyddBUWwsR9","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihyddBUWwsR9","pdf",10231443,27,"English","# Chapter 1\n## Visitors and
