But I’d come to find it was not an unwelcome change.  \nIn my short time here on Earth, my life had become fuller and more vibrant than I’d ever experienced in my homeworld of Coilfell. This was despite the fact I’d lived there for four hundred years and been its most powerful and feared dragon. Ethad of the Fire Mountains. The Scorcher of Skies. The Destroyer of Peace.  \nNow, on Earth, I was Ethan Cloud, ordinary(ish) human, and owner of a contracting business.  \nIf my Coilfellian self had somehow been able to peer into the future a year ago and look upon himself as I was now, I was sure he would be baffled and appalled by how diminished my life would seem and how bizarrely content I was, regardless. But the man, dragon, entity I’d been a year ago was unaware of the wide-spanning pleasures life on Earth offered, including the immense wealth just waiting to be accrued.  \nAdmittedly, I was still dismayed that humans measured their wealth with numbers on screens, instead of piles of gold, but their bodies were soft and small, which meant they weren’t suited for rolling in mountains of coins. With a dragon’s scaly hide and immense size, burrowing into treasure had felt like rolling in sand, and part of me missed that sensation, even while I delighted in so many of Earth’s other pleasures.  \nPerhaps, in time, I could accumulate enough wealth to give myself a small pile of treasure, purely for hoarding and admiring purposes. I could take on my hybrid form, allow crimson scales to erupt over my humanoid shape, and throw myself into a shining golden tide of pure wealth.  \nIt was more achievable than the other thing I missed from Coilfell, and that was being able to fly.  \nHumans had altogether too many things in their skies. Satellites, planes, drones. All of them had sensors and receivers and cameras that would guarantee my discovery if I shed my human disguise, resumed my true form, and spread my wings in flight.  \nStill, when I’d said I was content here, I hadn’t been lying. While I didn’t have a pile of treasure, or the chance to fly, life on Earth had more than enough amusements and excitement to make up for it.  \nChief among these were my companions. Clare had a wicked sense of humor and a temper as feisty as her red hair would imply. Danielle’s voracious mind devoured challenges and strove for greatness with a determination even the most stubborn dragon would commend. Stacey gleaned everything she would ever need to know about a person with one look, and her dark eyes were always exacting behind those sleek rectangular lenses. Liang had the quiet steadiness of an old soul in a young body--something I could relate to--and her round face implied a lamb-like gentleness we all knew to be true.  \nEach of them had indelibly inked themselves onto my heart and eachother ’s.
