Effective January 1, 2014, a new computer-based GED test, aligned with Common Core standards, will be implemented nationally. Consequently, all scores from the 2002 Series GED testing will expire and cannot be transferred to the new system. The memorandum strongly advises Work First participants to complete their current GED testing by the end of 2013 to avoid score expirations. The cost for GED testing will increase to $120 starting January 1, 2014. The document clarifies that Work First funds can be utilized as a supportive service for GED testing costs, provided it is integrated into the participant's Mutual Responsibility Agreement Plan of Action (DSS 6963B). Assistance is permissible as long as the funds do not constitute a definition of assistance, and the county's 150-200% county plan must explicitly include educational assistance as a supported service. For inquiries, participants and administrators are directed to contact workfirst.support@dhhs.nc.gov.
