Last lesson we looked at Bar Charts for qualitative data, as well as Histograms for quantitative data. Pie charts are used for QUALITATIVE DATA with categorical responses. They can display the survey results and response for preferences, data grouped by company brand, item or country. Here are a couple of good examples below.

| Q: Asked to 800 High School Students. What is your favorite pizza topping?
Activity Response Bell Peppers 12% Extra Cheese 15% Sausage 13% Spinach 20% Onions 10% Pepperoni 30% | Favorite Pizza Toppings
| Q: Which favorite topping received the lowest response, but made the top 6 list ?
A: Onions.
Q: How many voted for the most favorite topping, pepperoni ?
A: 240 people surveyed.
Q: How many more people voted for pepperoni than onions ?
A: 240-80 = 160 more people preferred pepperoni than onions asa favorite topping on pizza. |
| --- | --- | --- |

Pie charts can also show data comparisons well with a display. The United States is a world supplier of almonds, and leads the world in production with 62. 3% . The five countries that follow the United States produce the same amount as all the other countries in the world combined. This is easily seen in the display below.

| Almonds
Gross Domestic Product By Country
Country Thousand Tonnes USA 2,002 Spain 202 Iran 147 Morocco 112 Italy 74 Australia 72 Other 605 | Q: The United States Produces
62. 3% of the world’s almond supply.
