The practice of certified social work, including psychotherapy, was not restricted under the law. \nPsychotherapy Privilege. Chapter 893 of 1977 amended the Insurance Law and authorized NYSED to issue the “P” psychotherapy privilege to a Certified Social Worker who met requirements for 2,880 client contact hours of post-degree supervised experience in diagnosis and psychotherapy in a facility or non-facility setting. Experience had to be 20 hours/week for 48 weeks/year for 3 years or no less than 10 hours/week for 48 weeks/year for 6 years. A qualified supervisor was a Certified Social Worker with the privilege, a licensed psychologist, or a boardcertified psychiatrist. Psychotherapy sessions had to be at least 45 minutes with individual supervision of 1 hour/week or 2 hours every other week, group supervision was not allowed. After completing 36 months of acceptable experience, the applicant had to submit case summaries describing the diagnosis and treatment of two cases for scoring by the State Board to demonstrate competence. \nChapter 990 of 1984 amended the Insurance Law, authorizing NYSED to issue the “R” privilege toa Certified Social Worker with the “P” privilege who met requirements for 2,400 additional direct client contact hours in sessions of at least 45 minutes.
