It also changes the way we think and behave. One of the key skills in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is learning to spot and challenge Bad Thinking Habits (also known as cognitive distortions or crooked thinking) . \nThese unhelpful patterns can make us feel worse, even when they’re not based on the full picture. CBT helps us replace these distortions with a more realistic, balanced view – so we can respond to life’s challenges in acalmer, more helpful way. \nStep 1 : Catch It \nStart by journaling your thoughts. Try to capture what you’re saying to yourself about a stressful event or situation. What do you notice? \nStep 2: Question It \nUse the questions below to examine whether your thinking is distorted or out of balance. Then, gently challenge and reframe it with healthier, more rational thoughts. \nTop CBT Questions for Spotting and Challenging Crooked Thinking ☐ Am I falling into one of my usual Bad Thinking Habits? \n☐ Which thinking habit might this be (e.g. negative predicting, negative mind-reading, all-or-nothing, musty-rules, catastrophizing)? \n☐ What is the evidence for this thought or belief? \n☐ Is there any evidence against it that I’m ignoring? \n☐ Am I blowing this out of proportion or losing perspective? \n☐ Could I be being a little dramatic – or unhelpful – right now? \n☐ How does thinking this way make me feel and behave? \n☐ Has this way of thinking been helpful in the past – or has it held me back? \n☐ If my best friend were thinking this way, what would I gently suggest to them? \n☐ What is a calmer, more rational way to look at this situation? \n☐ What is it more true to say? Step 3 : Reframe It \nWrite out a new thought that is more balanced and compassionate. Aim for something true, proportionate, and helpful – not ‘blindly positive’, but realistic and rational and emotionally intelligent. \nReminder \nChanging thinking habits takes practice. Be patient and kind to yourself as you build this skill. Every time you challenge a distortion, you’re retraining your brain toward mental clarity and emotional resilience. \nDownload this post as a PDF \nExplore this in a deeper way using the ABCD exercise \nDownload a simple one page ThoughtForm: CBTAFG ThoughtReframeForm \nArchive handout short version: Download this post as a PDF: TipsToQuestionThinking \n Self acceptance and embracing who you are – CBT visualisation and self talk \nThis CBT post gives creative and practical ideas to build unconditional self-acceptance through visualisation and new self talk tips and hacks to manage anxiety and stress.
