INFROM THE COLD”(courtesy of Paramount Pictures). \nTHE SPy WHO CAME IN FROM THE CoLD.This is anironic title, since the spy,and the audience he takes withhim on his grim mission, never quite come in out of thebleak atmosphere in which the story is set.Based onJohn le Carre's best-selling novel, director Martin Ritt'sfilm departs just as much from the James Bond spyformula as Hud,his 1963 story of the modern West, departed from the Bonanza variety of horse opera.Andif the anti-hero of The Ipcress File could be called\"thethinking man's Bond,\"since he sometimes questionedthe ethics of his chiefs,Alec Leamas(Richard Burton)in this film can be called “the brooding man's Bond.” \nAlec is a shabby British spy who has become dis-illusioned with his lonely and insecure existence,symp-tomatic as it is of the anxious age in which all of uslive. His superior, called Control, orders him to becomeeven shabbier in his behavior to convince East Germancounterspies that he is ready to defect,so that he caneventually discredit one of their key men.As the planbegins to work,Alec becomes involved in a maze ofbetrayals and counter-betrayals on both sides and hiscynicism grows. As a pawn in the international game ofespionage,no one has cared about him as an individualfor so long that he has ceased to care himself.Even thetwo people in his life who try to befriend him,a shylibrarian(Claire Bloom)and an East German spy(Oskar Werner),are caught with him in the elaborateweb of deception. \nThough there is little action in the picture, and theplot is somewhat complicated for one who has not readthe book, there is nevertheless a subtle tone of suspensewhich builds beneath the surface of the story. All threeof the film's principals have managed to make over theirusual screen image in order to be able to give the low-key performances the film requires. \nSome have found the film's portrayal of a spy's exist-ence(and of human existence in general)a bit toopessimistic. But director Ritt counters that he has doneno more than to transfer to the screen as best he couldthe theme of the novel, which,he says,is that thepower struggle in the world has weakened the humanspirit:\"There is no concern except to win.The centralcharacters in the s","cbCailJp4NdiEvfN","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailJp4NdiEvfN","pdf",288891,"English","# RECENT
