fifteen-minute color epic,an alwaysserious and sometimes grim explication of gunboat di-plomacy in_1926 China,a country in ferment.Filmedlargely on Formosa, the film attempts to be more thanan interesting recreation of the conditions, the politicalconflicts, the events and the attitudes of the peoples con-fined to the time and place.Pounding heavily on themotivations of all factions and raising some of theprincipal characters to the symbolic level, the film at-tacks the question,if not actually the fact,of foreignintervention per se,through the construct of a fairlysuccessful allegory that gives food for thought today. \nThe title refers to the crew of the San Pablo,anAmerican gunboat assigned to protect U.S.commercialinterests by its mere presence in Chinese waters.TheSan Pablo has orders to stay\"carefully neutral\"in anuprising;to fire only when necessary to save Americanlives and then when all else has failed.Understandably, the Chinese resentment of the “foreign devils”flaresanyway, and the ship and crew become involved in moretrouble than they can get out of.Much of the destruc-tion,suggests the film,is brought on by the sin of stub-born and foolish pride, infecting key persons and groupson all sides. \nPrime exemption is Holman,a career sailor with noties,no desire to return “home”and no life interestexcept in ships'engines, which he knows and tends de-votedly.The role is central rather than heroic,a dis-passionate,simple young man of innate decency andgrowing human proportions, against whom the short-comings and excesses of others stand out.As Holman, who finds strength in doing a good job well and learnsthere may be more in life than his engines,SteveMcQueen turns in a well-rounded,compelling perform-ance.Sufficient time is spent developing his relationshipto Po-Han,member of the ship's \"black gang,\"to makeit wholly credible, sympathetic and dramatically sound. As Po-Han,young Japanese actor Mako does a verywinning job.
