\n# CATHOLIC\n\n## What Is IraqiFreedom?\n\nAugust 27,2003 \nBaghdad,Iraq \nDear friends, \nIt is midday today asI write this in an internet cafe. This morning.Kathy Kelly of Voicesin the Wilderness and I sadly missed anappointment with a dear friend,Ra'ad (whowatched the stars between bombs),whomwe've not yet seen.We were very delayed dueto traffic jams,in great part due to coalitionforces closing down a main street in front ofanother hotel where they have taken up residence.A half-hour later,we stopped to greetpeople in the Al Fanar Hotel and we heardthat four people had just been shot and killedin a nearby money exchange place-an unsuspecting onlooker and three men who workedthere. How tragic!Yesterday,Sattar told usthat in his neighborhood ten people werekilled in their house. No,life is far from normalhere in Baghdad. \nIam learning a lot of new things.Afteraninitial stifling night trying to sleep inside, noteven a fan to give reprieve from the heat,Imoved outside to the roof for the last twonights to join others, sleeping on a foam padand gratefully absorbing the cool night breeze.Sounds of gunfire going off during the nightpierced the otherwise silent streets,as thecurfew is rigorouslyenforced between 11pmand 4 am.Dark helicopters fly overhead likewarrior bees patrolling and announcing theirpresence. In the early morning hours as Kathyand I sat in the kitchen talking over coffee, ourconversation waa broken into, more than once,by the deafening sound of heavy tanks goingthrough the streets.Like our Iraqi friends,we are concerned about security, and are try-ing to be careful to be inside after 8pm,to walkonly on streets that are crowded with peopleduring the day,and always in pairs. \nThe Light \nhe replied,\"We want peace.Democracy.Industrialization.\"He spoke of his 82-yearold father who is very depressed.\"When heheard about the destruction of the nationalmuseum,he just wept and wept.\" \nAs I myself am registering and sortingthrough so many initial impressions, just getting my feet wet back in Baghdad after fourmonths absence,I can only try and relatesome of what I have been experiencing andhearing. Our days have been full and we havebeen able to see many friends. \nAnother riend asked mejust this morning, warmly but sternly it the same time,\"Whatare you (in the collective sense)doing here ifyou are not helping with securicy, with electricity or bringing some relief\"Another commented,\"The American people are misled.Someone should open their eyes.In the US.people don't know what the rest of the world is\" \nPeople are very worried about their safety, about the lack ofelectricity and jobs.Theyfeel that they have a long road ahead of themwith respect to the US occupation. \nOne older Iraqi man said \"There has beenachange in attitude toward the soldiers.Grim.People are cold and harsh with them.Thehoneymoon is over.\"In his neighborhood thesoldiers are using a police station as a base.\"They are living in miserable conditions.Theydon't talk with or do anything for the locals. They are not going to restaurants, are pro-hibited from buying food from the local mar-ket,have no access to telephones and noaccess to information either here or abroad. They are becoming edgy. Two days ago anIraqi innocently threw a coke bottle out ofthe window of acar.Four people were killed. We hear gunfire every night and explosions. These are not reported on TV.Americansare doing nothing about the looting.\" \nI will close now assuring you that we arealright, although we are wellaware ofhow precarious the situation is here.It is definitely anew time in Iraq. There is an openness to talkand meet that didn'texist before. However, noone believes that freedom has come.Somehav toldus that it waa better under Saddam. The strain everyone is under shows on thefaces of everyone we pass.People's expressionsegrim and serious now, often fixedstraight ahead as I walk by them. But moreoften than not, they soften immediately whenIgreet them with,\"Peace be with you.\"And thegreeting is returned
