BuildingNew York,N.Y.U.S.A. \nFOREWORD \nA DETAILED picture is presented herewith ofAmerican social service activities,as we find themconcentrated at their fullest development in NewYork City. \nThe monograph, covering this field, unfolds thevast expansion of modern social enterprises, revealsthe multiplicity of agencies engaged in this work, and minutely indicates the complex course of socialeducation required to meet these new conditions. For its particular object study,it takes the coursesoffered at Fordham University School of Sociologyand Social Service,New York City, and notes theirscientific methods of solving this important problem. \nThe valuable findings of a special questionnaire, sent out by the Rev.Matthew.L.Fortier,S.J,Ph.D,Dean of the School,to the numerous members of theFaculty, are further carefully analyzed and laidbefore the reader. They are all of a most practicalnature, dealing with the opportunities offered in theirfuture work to the graduates of the School, and thesalaries attainable by them. \nIncidentally the replies of the Faculty, freelyquoted by the author, cast strong lights over theentire field of social service. \nParticular stress is laid on the ideal motives whichimpel young men and women to enter this field, andon the wide range of human interests and possibilitiesfor good that here present themselves.Viewed in thelight of Faith, the religious sacredness of this workis vividly set forth and its ultimate rewards arepointed out as far beyond all appraisal in mere termsof earth. \n## FOBEWORD \n\nThroughout the entire study the danger of theinnumerable false doctrines and principles set forthin the realm of social ideas is made clear, and theanswer is given beyond all cavil to the momentousquestion:\"Should a Catholic student attend a non-Catholic social school?” \n## Catholic Social Education\n\nBY JoSEPH HussLEIN,S.J. \nWHEN on December 18,1903,Pope Pius Xaddressed the Italian Episcopate in his importantApostolic Letter on \"Catholic Social Action,\"he beganwith these significant words: \n\"In our first Encyclical to the Bishops of theworld,in which we echo all that our glorious Pre-decessor had laid down concerning the Catholic socialaction of the laity,we declared that this action wasdeserving of the highest praise, and was indeed neces-sary in the present condition of the Church andsociety. And we cannot but praise warmly the zealshown by so many illustrious personages who havefor a long time dedicated themselves to this glorioustask, and the ardor of so many brilliant young peoplewho have eagerly hastened to lend their aid to thesame.” \nThe direct reference in these words,as I under-stand well enough,is not precisely to what today weknow as social service.Pope Pius X here speaksrather of a more general and popular movement ofCatholics for the social betterment of the people, particularly in the important labor field. And yetwe cannot fail to perceive at once an obvious relationbetween this most Christian activity, intended tobridge over the chasm between rich and poor, andour present social service work. \nComing,then,to another document of the samegreat social-minded Pontiff,we find that while againinsisting with ","cbCaikxvgrRcJ6Cz","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikxvgrRcJ6Cz","pdf",1076100,22,"English","# Foreword\n# Catholic Social
