many elements of this latestfilm by the Fred Pakula-Robert Mulligan productionteam(To Kill a Mockingbird).Perhaps the slum schoolsetting and some of the disciplinary problems will be un-familiar,but surely not the day-to-day struggle of tryingto teach and still keep up with the administrative paper-work.This,of course, was to be expected since the filmis based on the best-seller by Bel Kaufman, who wrotehumorously but perceptively of what she had experiencedas a beginning teacher. \nSandy Dennis plays the role of the new Englishteacher, fresh from teachers college, who had to adjustto the realities of working in a school of disadvantagedstudents where the major efforts of the administration aredirected toward maintining a minimum of order.Patient-ly she keeps on trying, laughing at her mistakes, buthoping that she is making progress with her students.Discouraged after her efforts fail to help an obnoxiousdelinquent, she finally realizes that her students are learn-ing and decides to keep on with the struggle. \nThe film is well-knit,developed entirely within theconfines of Calvin Coolidge High School. The impersonalcharacter of the large,multi-racial institution is broughtout quite well by the use of an actual school of peelingpaint, crowded halls and old-fashioned classrooms.Captured with unflattering accuracy is the mountain ofbureaucratic paperwork and nonsensical forms that com-plicates the life of most teachers. No attempt is made toexplain why conditions must be this way in a largecentralized school, but the viewer soon realizes it is notthe most efficient way to carry on the important functionof education. \nThe events and characters in the film give the impres-sion of reality. This is probably the closest that a dramaticfilm can get(short of being a semi-documentary)to therealities of antiquated educational theory and facilities inmodern,large-city,school systems. The students in thefilm seem to be what they should. All deserve credit formaking this difficult aspect of the_story one of the mostconvincing elements of the film.Ellen O'Mara as Alice,a student with a crush on a teacher,is especially good ina role that could have been disastrous. \nThe teachers who represent various types of educatorsare uniformly good. The standouts are Eileen Heckart asa good-natured,emotional teacher,Ruth White as thehard-working,practical one,and Patrick Bedford as theteacher who has artistic aspirations.Others are theoverly-busy principal(Sorrell Booke),the unimaginativedisciplinarian(Roy Poole)and a hopeless school nurse(Elena Karam). One of the highlights of the film is ateachers’meeting characterized by pettiness,bo","cbCaihTaxUqgfFmR","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihTaxUqgfFmR","pdf",286017,"English","# RECENT CLASSIFICATIONS\n## CLASS A,
