\nTHE BEDFORD INCIDENT.The maintenance of militarypatrols by the United States in the exigencies of theCold War can easily result in“incidents”similar to theone described in this gripping tale of a disastrous seapatrol.The main thesis of the film is that no matterhow sophisticated the machines of war,it is the oper-ator who is liable through human error to misjudgea situation.This theme has been presented in mon-strous proportions by other recent films such as Dr.Strangelove and Fail Safe.The strength of TheBedford Incident lies in the fact that it is limited inits scope of action to a single encounter between anAmerican destroyer and a Russian submarine.Thisis well within the bounds of conjecture and its im-pact derives from our acceptance of its plausibility.Few people will leave the theater feeling that thesituation presented in the film was a phoney one.  \nRichard Widmark plays well the strong role of theAmerican captain who is dedicated to performinghis patrol mission as efficiently as if the country werein a state of war.He has little time for men who donot fit this conception of duty.When a magazine re-porter(Sidney Poitier)and an incompetent doctor(Martin Balsam)come aboard,he makes plain hisdislike.Just as the audience is beginning to under-stand him,a Soviet sub is spotted in Western ter-ritorial waters.The rest of the film is the effect thatthe chase has upon the captain and his men.Asin the case of The Enemy Below(1957),such acat-and-mouse game makes for raw nerves and highsuspense.  \nThe film was directed by James Harris who pre-viously had served as producer for Stanley Kubrick(most notably in Paths of Glory).His first direc-torial assignment shows him to be skilled in thedevelopment of character and action.He has alsobeen fortunate in the abilities of his director of pho-tography,Gilbert Taylor,whose black and whitecamera work has captured the atmosphere of routinevigilance and then the shock of action.Some good char-acter parts emerge in the film.Eric Portman plays aformer German U-boat commander with a wonderfusense of irony.Wally Cox turns in a fine performanceas a dedicated sonar man.James MacArthur is believ-able as the young ensign whom Widmark is trying toharden.  \nThe film however has several drawbacks in its scriptby James Poe.Poitier and Balsam are not well-definedbut serve only as devices to reveal certain aspects ofWidmark's personality.Moreover,as it developes to-wards its conclusion,the film seems too slowly paced.Whatever its defects,The Bedford Incident presents athought-provoking story all along
