life willbe affected by technological change. As a result, sciencefiction films have indicated futurity by emphasizing special effects, gadgets and set design. They have neglectedto probe the nature of what might be the human situa-tion.Going against this tradition is Francois Truffaut'slatest film, which he adapted from Ray Bradbury's novel,a story placed in some nebulous future which seems very Werner)who is conscientious and efficient in carrying out hiswork and is marked for promotion by his Captain(CyrilCusak).Montag accidentally becomes friendly withClarisse(Julie Christie)whose own rebellion against thesystem inspires him to sample some of the material hehas until then destroyed routinely. His wife Linda(alsoMiss Christie)informs on him,and Montag becomes ahunted man who escapes to the forest where the BookPeople are trying to keep their literature alive by memo-rizing it. \nThe film is not a political allegory about a present orfuture totalitarian regime engaged in cut off from the literary heritage ofthe past.A society is pictured in which life is artificiallystimulated by wall-television and drugs.Books are for-bidden because they might cause the individual to_bedisturbed by thoughts contrary to the public good.TheCaptain patiently explains how doubts about life can beacquired by reading contradictory thinkers. The peopleof Fahrenheit 451(the title is the
