It argues that the work’s novelty lies in compositional principles: stark red, black, and white fields that combine harmoniously yet arbitrarily, without traditional figure-ground organization. LEE \n# CATHERINE LEEPAINTINGS\n\nJohn Davis Gallery \n# CATHERINE LEE’S NEW PAINTINGS\n\nEncountering Catherine Lee's recentwork, like all art that is truly new,inevi-tably makes us feel unsteady, and even alittle uneasy.Ordinarily we approach arecently completed group of works ask-ing ourselves only whether or not welike it,a question that usually answersitself rather quickly.Very occasionally, however, the feeling arises that perhapswhat seems at first merely odd or strik-ing is in fact something more than that, and slowly the possibility occurs to usthat what we are looking at is in someimportant sense different from the artwe have seen before. What makes usuneasy, perhaps,is that this sense of en-countering something new is rare, sorare that it leads to an almost sublimi-nal sense of disorientation. And also, ofcourse,to the sense that we shouldsomehow define and understand thework that feels so unexpected. \nWhat is new in Lee's work starts withher compositional principles, which aredifferent from those we have seen be-fore.Red,black,and white,in Passen-ger;for example, simply fit together, quite perfectly and harmoniously,to besure, but at the same time entirely arbi-trarily.There is no figure and no \nground,nor is there any other organiz-ing principle to unite the picture.Thecolors are pure and contrasting.Some-times,in this new group of paintings, the combination of colors in itself is un-likely,as in the outrageous pink andblack of Liar;Liar where the two colorsseem almost forced to exist together. The shapes, though simple, are neverregular.Aside from the nearly rectangu-lar form of the assembled canvases, theshape of each component is never a per-fect geometrical figure—always there isan irregular curve,an odd zig or zag.Nor do the paintings'beautiful,care-fully brushed textures suggest any un-derlying unity, since each is obviouslypainted in a different manner. \nFor paintings to lack any kind of in-herent compositional unity is in factvery odd,and looking at Lee's work wehasten to reassure ourselves that no suchthing is happening.Naturally, theirshape is reassuring, since after all theyare vaguely rectangular canvases.Yeteven this sense of an underlying order iscalled into question as soon as we real-ize that each color is in fact a separatecanvas, thus clearly implying that the \nconventional rectangular shape is al-most adventitious and that one or moreof those present could be taken away, oranother could almost equally well beadded. \nIn the arbitrariness of these paintingslies their wit and their elegance.Perfectas they are, brilliantly colored,beauti-fully balanced, and exquisitely painted, they are nevertheless willful, and theirexistence is potentially temporary.Sincetheir perfect fit depends on the accurateplacement of a few nails,we find our-selves for an instant trying to rememberhow they go together, lest we shouldneed to reassemble the painting like ajigsaw puzzle. This uneasy feeling, however,is obviously absurd, since theshapes of the canvases themselves are sosimple that no effort at all would berequired to put them correctly backtogether. \nYet the paintings cohere;they arethere,on the walls of the artist's studio.Even though all our expectations ofthem have been subtly denied, they de-monstrably exist, and they exist aspaintings, ordered, balanced, precise, not at all like the jarring mass of frag-ments one might have expected.De-spite the care she has taken to go against","cbCaieCapmr77kBr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieCapmr77kBr","pdf",943425,16,"English","#
