Compiled by John Harris, it reflects on unresolved scholarly questions, highlights relationships among key figures attributed to designs, and distinguishes practical projects from theoretical Palladian exercises. rather an annotated guide, dependent very much upon what has already been published.Ithas, alas, neither benefited from Mr Timothy Connor's work on Vitrwius Britannicus, nordoes it solve the problems of the crucial years 1712 and 1713 when Campbell was converted toPalladianism and Wanstead was designed. The part played(even unwittingly)by the mysterious'James Smith'is also unsolved, although it is clear that his theoretical Palladian drawings werea fertile source of inspiration to Campbell. There are many other enigmas that are pointed outbut not explained:the relationship between Roger Morris and Campbell, the identity of Camp-bell's draughtsman and the authorship of the interiors of many of his buildings, are but a few.Apart from a number of smaller town houses and unexecuted designs, there are probably nomajor executed works to be discovered, unless they were commissioned after the appearance ofthe third volume of Vitrwius Britannicus in 1725.This cataloguc cannot, therefore, addextensively to our knowledge of Campbell.Rather it illumines thc development of some designs(notably for Houghton and Compton Place)and fills in minor details. The key drawings areprobably those of 1712 for the New Churches, and those of 1713 for Wanstead. An analysis ofCampbell's designs shows a mind less cerebral than Jones's or Lord Burlington's,for Campbellwas cautious and conservative, but he was astute enough to recognize the main chance and, intaking it,to establish a pattern for country and town house building. \nJOHN HARRIS \nOctober 1972 \nTO \nH.M.COLVIN \nour rcbuilding Cawdor Castle. It is now recognizedthat Colen's father was Donald Campbell of Boghole and Urchany, and that Donald's elder brothcr was Sir Hugh Campbell of Cawdor.Donald's mother was Elizabeth Brodie, and in the diary of AlexanderBrodie, under 15 June 1676,is the information that had eluded architec-tural historians for so long:\"This morning Don.Campbell's eldestson Colen Campbell
