Practically,it is aninstitution that portends tremendous consequences.It is alocal problem,but one capable of much wider mischief,for\"as long as caste in India does exist,Hindus will hardlyintermarry or have any social incercourse with outsiders;and if Hindus world migratc to other regions on carth,Indiancaste would become a world problem.Theoretically,it hasdefied a great many scholars who have taken upon them-selves,as a labour of love,to dig into its origion.Such beingthe case,I cannot treat the problem in its entirety.Time,sp2ce ard acumen,I am afraid,would all fail me,if Iattempt to do otherwise than limit myself to phase ofit,namely the genesis,mechanism and spread of the castesystem.I will strictly observe this rule,and will dweil onextraineous matters only when it is nccessary to clarify orsupport a point in my thesis.  \nTo proceed with the subject.According to well-knownEthnologists.the population of India is a mixture of Aryans,Dravidians,Mongolians and Scythians.All these stocks ofpeopie came into India from various directions and withvaricus cultures,centuries ago,when they were in a tribal  \n3  \nstate.They all in turn elbowed their entry into the countryby fighting with their predecessors,and after a stomachfulof it settled down as peaceful neighbours.Through constantcontact and mutual intercourse they evolved a commonculture that superseded their distinctive cultures.It maybe granted that there has not been a thorough amu!gamationof the various stocks that make up the people of India,and to a traveller from within the boundaries of Indiathe East presents a marked contrast in physique and evenin colour to the West,as does the South to the North.But amalgamation can never be the sole criteron ofhomogeneity as predicated of any people.Ethnieally allpeoples arc heterogencous.It is the unity of culture thatis the basis of homogeneity.Taking this for granted,Iventure to say that there is no country that can rival tieIndian Peninsula with respect to the unity of its culture.It has not only a geographic unity,but it has over andabove all a deeper and a much more fundamental unity-theindubitable cultural unity that covers the land from end toend.  But it is because of this homogeneity that Castebecomes a problem so difficult to b:explained.If the HinduSociety were a mere federation of mutually cxclusivc unitsthe matter would be simple enough.But Caste is aparcelling of an already homogeneous unit,and the explan-tion of the geinesis of Caste is the explanatioin of this proces.of parcelling.  \nBefore launching into our field of enquiry,it is betterto advise ourselves regarding the nature of a caste.I willtherefore draw upon a few of the best students of caste fortheir definition of it:一  \n1.
