Although the functionalization of carbon materials is essential for efficient adsorption, the structural control of carbon materials remains challenging. At the same time, oxygen functional groups can increase surface polarity, but conventional oxidation methods lack control over group arrangement and often degrade the carbon framework. This study introduces vicioxite, a newly coined term derived from “vicinal ” and “ oxygen ” to describe carbon materials incorporating adjacent oxygen functionalities within a conjugated carbon framework, synthesized by a catalyst-free route to elucidate effective structural configurations for CO2 and H2O capture. We synthesized model materials using coronene-coated activated carbon fibers by a regioselective two-step process consisting of bromination and hydrolysis. This method introduced adjacent OH groups while preserving the π-conjugated basal plane. Computational analyses revealed that the specific edge topology of coronene energetically favors the formation of adjacent OH pairs, whereas steric hindrance restricts their formation on armchair edges. Experimental characterization, including 13C NMR, confirmed the formation of these structures. Crucially, CO2 temperature-programmed desorption showed that samples rich in adjacent OH groups had a superior CO2 adsorption capacity to untreated activated carbon fibers. These results suggest that adjacent OH groups induce interactions with CO2 and H2O, indicating that control over the local spatial arrangement of functional groups is essential for designing high-performance adsorbents. \nKEYWORDS : Vicioxite, Adjacent OH groups, Oxygen-containing carbon materials, H2O adsorption, CO2 adsorption \n1. Introduction \nThe mitigation of global warming and climate change caused by the accumulation of greenhouse gases is one of the most urgent challenges [1, 2] . Consequently, efficient carbon capture and storage technologies must be developed for the removal of carbon dioxide (CO2) from industrial flue gases and the atmosphere [3, 4] . However, the practical implementation of these technologies faces a commendable challenge: real-world exhaust streams almost invariably contain moisture (H2O) . In many conventional adsorbents, H2O vapor competes with CO2 for adsorption sites, severely inhibiting capture efficiency. At the same time, from the perspective of humidity control \nand adsorption heat pumps, the affinity for H2O vapor is a desirable trait. Therefore, controlling the adsorption behavior toward CO2 and H2O is critical for designing next-generation porous materials. \nChemical modification of carbon surfaces with heteroatoms is a common strategy for enhancing their affinity for CO2 and H2O. Whereas nitrogen-containing functional groups have been extensively studied [5–7], the precise structural control over oxygen-containing functional groups has been relatively underresearched [8, 9] . Oxygen functional groups, particularly hydroxyl groups (OH), can form strong hydrogen bonds with water molec","cbCaigFrGQ5SQivm","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaigFrGQ5SQivm","pdf",17713837,"English","# Introduction\n## Background and challenge in CO2/H2O adsorption\n## Oxygen functional groups and limits of conventional oxidation\n## Vicinal/adjacent OH structures and related precision synthesis","[{\"question\":\"What problem does the paper address in carbon-based CO2 and H2O capture?\",\"answer\":\"It addresses the difficulty of precisely controlling oxygen functional group structures on carbon adsorbents and the fact that moisture competes with CO2 adsorption in real exhaust streams.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the study define and prepare vicioxite?\",\"answer\":\"Vicioxite is defined as a carbon material incorporating adjacent oxygen functionalities within a conjugated carbon framework, synthesized using a catalyst-free two-step bromination and hydrolysis process.\"},{\"question\":\"What evidence supports the formation and role of adjacent OH pairs?\",\"answer\":\"Computational analyses predict edge-topology-dependent formation of adjacent OH pairs, 13C NMR confirms the structures, and CO2 temperature-programmed desorption shows higher CO2 adsorption capacity for samples rich in adjacent OH groups.\"}]","Carbon Reports - Vol. 5 No. 2 - Vicioxite | PDF",1791024855]
