Our July 2026 issue asked on the cover:“Is your Cooling System summer fit?”We had no idea when producing the magazine that record-breaking June heat was right around the corner. While some of you dodged the 30+°C spike for a pleasant mid-20s breeze, those of us in the south endured sticky, humid nights. No wonder desk and pedestal fan sales went through the roof!  \nI avoided driving a few cars in my collection, they just couldn’t keep me cool. My 22-year-old Audi A8 has a bowed condenser, so regassing it is pointless. It needs a replacement. That means a‘front bumper off’ job – plus I’ve bought a new auxiliary drive belt to fit while we’re in there.  \nThe 2003 Skoda Octavia’s climate control is just as feeble. It either has a leak, needs a regas, or both. Then there’sthe 2014 Vauxhall Mokka 1.4T I bought at auction last year. That needs deeper investigation; it swallows the most expensive aircon gas (R-1234yf ), which  \nvanished within two days.  \nEven the 2004 Toyota Corolla Verso has given up. A few years back, I found a hole in the pipework under the battery, but fortunately someone on eBay was selling the correct used OE part. It was fitted with new O-rings and worked fine for months. Now that doesn’t work either!  \nAircon was once a luxury car fitment, but today it’s standard spec for almost anything built in the last decade.
