The editorial debates whether bold design choices block appreciation of advanced technology, including axial-flux motors, innovative battery concepts, and immersive sound synthesis. It also highlights the Luce’s tactile, retro-inspired cockpit and ambitious drivetrain engineering, while warning that aesthetics can still shape market interest.","AUGUST 2026 \nISSUE 769 £6.50 \nGOLF: STILL UNBEATABLE? \nSurely Kia’s brand-new rival can topple VW’s trusty hatch... \nFUTURE ICON? HUGE GAMBLE? INSIDE AMG’S AUDACIOUS 1200BHP HYPER EV \nAUGUST 2026 I ISSUE 769 Mercedes-AMG GT EV meets the icons + Polestar’s best car yet: the 300-mile test + Bayley: 50 years of the Ford Fiesta WWW. . .CARMAGAZINE CO UK \nMERCS \nWhen does design get in the way of engineering? \nBy the time you read this, the dust will have largely settled from the furore over both our cover star – the new AMG GT 4-Door – and Ferrari’s first ever electric car, the Luce. The electric AMG caused the internet to implode, only for the Ferrari to do the same thing again a few weeks later. \nDesign is of course subjective, and social media commentators do not strictly translate into people who actually buy the cars they criticise with such vitriol. Both AMG and Ferrari know this, as should all of us. But, focusing on our lime green cover hero for now, there are surely very few people out there who would ever call the AMG pretty. The front end looks like Darth Vader’s helmet has melted and the rear end, with its big black panel, is absolutely baffling; there isn’t a single thing I could compare it to within Mercedes and AMG’s lineage, so it’s clearly not a retro design detail and, up close, it just looks so tacky. When AMG’s design team pulled the cover off while I was standing next toitina studio, I couldn’t help but wince; at no angle could I see something positive about the way it looked. Not the reaction they wanted. \nThe Ferrari, meanwhile, is just…strange. The fact it looks unlike anything else from Maranello can be seen as a positive; you have to commend Ferrari for committing to such a drastic, clean design. But, speaking before the covers came off, even LoveFrom co-founder Marc Newson admitted there was some ‘healthy apprehension’ regarding the reaction to its reveal. Perhaps the Luce’s look would have been an easier pill to swallow if its proportions were lower, longer and sleeker – like a Taycan or the Polestar 5. Alas, the internet arbiters have already decided: both this and the AMG are an instant write-off. NEXT! \nWhich is a shame, because the tech and \nengineering on both are fascinating. A reminder (for what feels like the umpteenth time, given how long Mercedes has been talking about it) that the AMG uses axialflux electric motors – a relatively new technology that essentially no other production EV uses, but one that enables e-power to be lighter, more responsive and generally more efficient. The battery concept on that car, too, is complex but very clever. And yes, while it might not be an actual V8, the on-board ‘AMGForce’ system creates a synthetic but entirely convincing engine sound that’ll almost certainly help inject a spine tingle or two. \nAnd the Luce? It’s the interior for me. An absolute knockout. Ferraris haven’t exactly been known for having stellar HMI recently, but the LoveFrom team’s slightly retro-ishand ever so tactile cockpit elements come together beautifully; every dial and toggle feels fantastic, the screen is crisp and some of the details such as the aircraft-like lever for launch control are just fabulous. The quad motors, smart all-wheel steering, active suspension and the clever ‘torque shift engagement’ tech are all engineering elements I’m extremely keen to try. \nAnd that’s exactly it. The looks matter so little when you’re in the driver’s seat, engaging with the car. Design absolutely shouldn’t be discounted, I’m certainly not saying that, but when it starts to get in the way of genuinely impressive engineering… that’swhen design becomes a problem. \nWho knows? The Luce and GT may well be two of the finest handling cars the world has ever seen. We’ll find out in the months to come, but the risk is that most people (even those who have the financial means to own one) won’t care, if they’ve already been repulsed by the way these cars look. \nEnjoy the issue. \nJake G","cbCaihasrLEFuBNO","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihasrLEFuBNO","pdf",49450448,6,1,132,"English","en",105,"# Agenda\n## The concept previewing BMW’s electric M3\n## Porsche
