\n# Para-1\n\nGroundwater is a crucia source of drinking water, irrigation, and industrial use inIndia. It supports agriculture, sustains rural livelihoods, and meets the needs ofmillions of households and industries. However, groundwater levels are decliningrapidly in many regions. This is mainly due to over-extraction for agriculture anddomestic use, population growth, urbanization, and changing rainfall patterns.Stateswith intensive agriculture and densely populated urban areas, such as Punjab,HaryanaRajasthan,Gujarat,Tamil Nadu, and parts of Maharashtra and Karnataka, are especially affected by the continuous fall in groundwater levels. The declining groundwater levels have serious consequences.Falling water tableslead to drying of wells and hand pumps, making water inaccessible in many areas. The cost of irrigation increases as water has to belifted from greater depths, raisingenergy consumption and expenses for farmers. This reduces agricultural productivityand affects food security.Over-extraction also increases the risk of land subsidenceand causes deterioration in water quality due to higher concentration of sats andcontaminants.Rural communities, especially small and marginal farmers and womenwho bear the burden of water collection, face greater hardshipsOverall, groundwaterdepletion threatens water security and sustainable development across the country. To address this crisis,India must adopt sustainable groundwater management practices.Rainwater harvesting, recharge structures, and watershed management can helpreplenish groundwater.Promoting micro-irrigation,crop diversification, and lesswater-intensive crops will reduce pressure on water resources.Regulation ofgroundwater extraction, strict implementation of laws, and real-time monitoringare essential.Community participation and awareness can encourage responsiblewater use and collective action.India must move toward sustainable groundwatermanagement today to protect future generations and ensure long-term water security.Source:CGWB Reports,NITI Aayog,UN World Water Development Report \n# Para-2\n\nPara-3 \n+Edit \nSTUDY FUNDA UPSC \n25,685 subscribers \nshare link
