Canoeing the Murray River [Australia]as EnvironmentalEducation:A Tale of Two Rivers1\n\nAlistair Stewart,La Trobe University,Bendigo,Australia \n## Abstract\n\nThe Murray River, lying at the heart ofAustralia's largest catchment, isused extensively in outdoor education programs in south-eastern AustraliaSince European settlement the river's ecological health has declined consid-erably due to activities such as damming for irrigation and clearing ofnative vegetation.Colonial notions of how the river ought to behave and beutilized have contributed to the river's transformation physically,ecological-ly and culturally. In this critical reflection on practice and experiences I dis-cuss two different outdoor education approaches to encountering theMurray:the river as a venue for canoejourneys;and, the river as a placewith a unique ecology, declining health and diverse human relationships andimpacts.Contrasting these encounters I draw attention to the need for con-sideration of the epistemological and ontological dimensions of practice thatmay shape the educational consequences of an experience. There is growing evidencethat the Murray is in the process of rejecting the physical and cultural trans-formation that it has undergone in this time.Declining water quality, loss ofbiodiversity, increasing salinity, and increasing numbers of introduced \nspecies all hint that the river is under mounting stress. The reasons for thedeclining river health are a complex mix of geology, ecology, and changingpatterns of human understanding and use (Sinclair,2001). \nThe same mild climate, topography and easy gradient of the river thatplayed a role in shaping the pattern of European settlement along theMurray has also led outdoor educators of south-eastern Australia to utilize thearea in their programs.Andrew Brookes(2002),an Australian outdoor edu-cator,asks the pertinent question “does it matter if,and how contemporaryAustralians experience the bush?”(p.406).If I make the assumption that yes, contemporary Australians will experience the bush,or in this case the river, then the issue becomes how might they encounter the bush or river and whatrole might outdoor education play in taking Australians into the outdoors.Asoutdoor education experiences construct places, and meanings of place, through the approach taken in an experience(Brookes,2002),what shapeought an experience take in order to address erosion, salinity,or declining bio-diversity?The combination of a relatively easy setting in which to conductcanoe journeys and the current declining health of the Murray has prompt-ed me to consider how I might construct outdoor education experiences thatwill increase awareness and understanding of environmental issues facing theMurray. In this paper I reflect c","cbCaikpv217FpIYC","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikpv217FpIYC","pdf",735445,12,"English","# The Murray River: A Place for Education\n##
