Some do not know they qualify or about all benefits available or didn’t know about changes to eligibility rules. Others think they earn too much or are covered by other benefit plans. And some have been rejected once and mistakenly believe that decision was final.  \nVAC has a range of programs and benefits providing financial support and medical treatment for health conditions caused or aggravated by service (including pain and mental illness or injury) that prevents normal mental or physical activities.  \nTo be eligible for VAC benefits, you must have a medically diagnosed chronic disability or health condition caused or aggravated by service in the Canadian military or Royal Canadian Mounted Police or wartime service in the merchant navy or Allied forces. Spouses and dependent children of veterans receiving VAC benefits, or who should have been receiving them, are also eligible for some benefits and financial support.  \nThere are myths and misunderstandings preventing veterans and their families from applying. One common misunderstanding is that benefits are only for combat and wartime veterans.  \n“Older (military) veterans think they had to serve in the Second World War or in Korea,” said national veterans service director Carolyn Hughes of The Royal Canadian Legion.“Younger veterans, say in their 30s, think of Afghanistan and the Persian Gulf.”But benefits are there for “anybody who served, is serving or has served and has a physical or mental injury caused or aggravated by that service.”  \nSome veterans believe they earn too much to qualify, but what VAC provides is a pension or compensation, not income insurance.
