\nIn the depths of the Great Depression, the New Deal devisedthe Civilian Conservation Corps to put unemployed young mento work on reforestation and conservation projects. Before it wasover, the CCC enrolled three million young Americans in hundredsof \"camps\"around the country, gave them some sense of orderand purpose and,in the process, among many permanently usefulprojects, planted half the training campwhose purpose was to explore the means for turning the CCC intoa form of national service. \nThe sons of William James attended the camp's openingceremonies;his biographer,Ralph Barton Perry, wrote in supportof the enterprise. And articulate leaders as varied as SenatorGeorge Aiken,Stuart Chase,Dorothy Canfield Fisher,RalphFlanders,Eleanor Roosevelt and Dorothy Thompson became
