It explains how belief in hidden truth shapes career decisions, then outlines major contemporary occult schools—Spiritualism, Theosophy, and the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn—along with typical entry points such as scholarship, assisting spirit mediums, and public lectures. Much of the world had recently been ravaged by the dual cruelties of the Great War and the Great Influenza, leaving millions of people bereft and seeking answers. When earthly and religious authorities struggled to provide, occultists stepped in. \n“Occult” means hidden, and as an Occultist your investigator is dedicated to finding well-kept secrets and wrestling them into the light. Unless, of course, you’re a charlatan. \nCAREER PATHS \nThe first thing to decide when making your Occultist is whether they actually believe in the occult. Do they believe the dead can communicate with the living? Is it reasonable to them that Secret Masters might whisper universal truths to the initiated, or that the right rituals, properly enacted, can open doors to power, wisdom and fortune? \nIf they do believe, or at least approach the Occult with an open mind, they will probably be well-read in at least one major contemporary school of occult thought, such as Spiritualism, Theosophy, or the magics of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. Spiritualism, immensely popular in the inter-war years, posits that the dead remain aware of the living and can be contacted through a séance, a trance, or other mystical means, for guidance and words of comfort. \nTheosophy is a sort of pan-religious movement, including glosses on Middle Eastern and Eastern traditions, that believes in the existence of ancient, powerful, and wise “Masters,” astral projection, near-immortality, and a cosmic process of evolution. The Golden Dawn, while a bit eclectic in belief and practice, grew out of Masonic rites and involves astronomy, alchemy, the tarot, and ritual magics. \nAn Occultist’s career might begin as a scholar of folklore or myth, or as an assistant to a “spirit medium” who helps set upséances and other semi-public events. There is room in legitimate occult practice for a pure scholar, someone who studies ancient and contemporary texts without engaging in any particular rituals. Practical occultists are rarely able to make a living doing it and wind up pursuing their studies as a hobby alongside other seekers, away from prying eyes. \nA recognized expert in the field may be able to make a living with speaking and lecturing appearances. The Theosophists, in particular, will often rent a large auditorium and invite the public to attend lectures on relevant research about spiritual \npractice, the nature of the soul, and the existence of proof of life after death. \nSéances, tarot readings, and other forms of divination are also \npopular ways to make money with occult knowledge. The papers are filled with advertisements and dubious testimonials for trance mediums, clairvoyants, and love advisors. In big cities like Baltimore and New York there is usually an illegal lottery game (the “numbers racket”","cbCaiaViFm2wxoVy","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiaViFm2wxoVy","pdf",179224,"English","# Career Paths\n## OCCULT OF PERSONALITY\n## ROLEPLAYING TIPS","[{\"question\":\"How should an investigator decide whether they are a true Occultist or a charlatan?\",\"answer\":\"The kit asks whether the investigator actually believes in occult claims such as communication with the dead or universal truths delivered through initiations and properly enacted rituals.
