The readings can not be any longer than five (5) minutes. There is no cost for the July Open Readings meeting!  \nFacilitators for July’s General Meeting will be Teri Lown and Alysse Adularia.  \nPlease note the new location! Open Readings Meeting will be held at the Fair Oaks Public Library, 11601 Fair Oaks Boulevard, Fair Oaks.  \nJuly 18 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m.  \nThere will be NO Third Saturday General Meeting in August.  \nThere will be NO 1st Friday Meeting in July due to the holiday.  \nCalifornia Writers Week 2026  \nTwenty-three years ago, the California Assembly passed a resolution creating California Writers Week, the third week in October, encouraging the people of our state to reflect upon the contributions California writers have made to humankind. The CWC Sacramento Branch is taking its reflection communitywide, through a service project targeting Sacramento County assisted living residences, veterans’ centers, and public libraries with programs for senior patrons.  \nTeams of CWC Sacramento members will visit these venues during October 11-17, and will read excerpts of their writing, answer questions about the process of writing, and give away copies of their books. We are inviting other writers’groups in Sacramento County to join us.  \nPresident’s Message  \nSandra S. Navarro  \nHappy Fourth of July! Our nation’s 250th birthday is July 4th, 2026. The country is older than Jack Benny. (A pause for the Millennials among us to Google this iconic mid-century comedian whose running joke was that he was “forever 39”and whose obituary printed this gag, thus overlooking the star’s birthday 80 years earlier.)  \nTeri Lown (our club’s Secretary) and I swapped our Revolutionary War ancestors’ stories recently. Her ancestor was a key player in laying a 75-ton chain across the Hudson River in 1778, thus impeding the movement of British ships north of West Point, New York. I saw a thrilling segment about this (just before I dozed off) in Ken Burns’ recent documentary series,“The American Revolution.”  \nOne of my Revolutionary War ancestors was a New Englander named Oliver Read. Hoping that you will not doze here, I will say that Oliver served in the Woodstock Company, in the Lexington Alarm, April 1775 (the first battle of the Revolution) . He is also listed as a Private and later as a Sergeant in a company commanded by Capt. Stephen Brown of Woodstock, 4th Regimental Connecticut Line. He enlisted again on March 10, 1777 and was omitted from the rolls in November 1778 when he was supposed dead.  \nMy abiding interest is in Oliver’s wife Betty (my great-great-great-greatgreat-grandmother). She could and did write. With Oliver off to war, Betty Read struggled to get by in Pomfret, Connecticut. Three of the four young Read children died in August and September of 1777. Betty’s one surviving letter to Oliver states,  \n“My Dr I hope you will Do your utmost to come home soon for my trouble and Destress is so great that I would give all the world for my nerest frind to comfort me.”  \nNever discount the power of the written word.  \nCalling all authors!
