Maybe you have adopted your best friend, a puppy to grow with your new family or even a senior dog to give them a loving home for the rest of their life. Whatever the reason, we want to do our best for our four-legged friend , and a fresh food diet is a great step to start their new life with you, so Let’s talk fresh. \nWhy should I feed a Fresh food Diet? \nThink about this-kibble vs fresh, highly processed foods full of synthetic nutrients with 10% moisture vs natural nutrients with 70% moisture. We know ourselves, the doctors tell us that we should be eating minimal processed foods and eating as much variety of fresh food as possible for our own health, so why should that be any different for our pets? All-natural diets include a variety of fresh, quality ingredients and this can provide the best possible foundation for your dog’s health and happiness. \nSome benefits include: \n• Stronger hearts \n• Better digestion and lower incidence of digestive problems \n• Better formed stools \n• Shiny coat and healthy skin-less allergies \n• Strong eyes, ears, nose, teeth and nails \n• Less bad breath \n• Stronger immune system \n• Less frequent trips to the vets \n• Can even add years to their life \nThe Basics \nGenerally, over a week your dog eats around 20% of their body weight, averaging about 2 to 3% of this a day. Many factors can change this amount, for example if your dog needs to lose or gain weight , so applying this general rule when feeding a fresh food diet, and then increasing or decreasing the amount depending on your dog’s individual needs , is a great starting point. \nBy including a variety of fresh foods on rotation in your dogs’ diet , can help your dog to get the nutrients he needs. Just like our meals, nutritionally, each meal will be different and will not be a “complete” meal, but over time , will balance out and meet all nutritional needs, so long asthe diet has enough variety , since every ingredient brings something different to the bowl. \nMeals can be served raw, steamed, flash-fried or cooked, just making sure that a variety of fresh food is always offered, that is the key. It is important to keep in mind that cooking destroys many nutrients therefore lightly steaming/ flash-frying is a better choice to preserve the nutrients, although raw is the best as no nutrients are lost and what a dog’s digestive system is tailored for. Think about this, does a wolf cook his meal? \nI adopted a puppy, are they too young? \nNo, puppies can be transitioned to a fresh food diet straight away! \nPuppies grow so fast and need twice as many calories than an adult dog to supply the nutrients they need for growth and development. Puppies can start soft solids around 4 weeks old and by 8 weeks, can be eating the same as mum, just of course smaller in size and amounts. Puppies can be a little tricky in meeting their nutritional needs while they are growing , and it can be a little overwhelming if your new to the world of fresh food feeding, but don’t worry there is many pre-made mixes for puppies available at your local pet shop (in the freezer) that have been nutritionally balanced that you could use, so you can be assured your puppy is getting the right balance of nutrients until you feel comfortable to DIY. Just remember the more variety they have from the start, the less picky they may become in the future. \nI adopted an old dog, I can’t change them \nnow? \nYes! you can, it’s never too late to start a fresh food diet. The difference with Senior dogs is sometimes they need less calories, as their metabolism starts to slowdown with age. If they aren’t as active anymore, you can reduce the size of their meal, to help maintain their weight but if they are still active , you can just continue feeding as usual.
