SEE PAGE \nIn the dark ofnight, on January25th, ice crept up the streets and sidewalks ofCabbagetown. It invaded our parks and porches, and many of us greeted it with a coldness of our own. \nIf we still had schools in the 'hood, ice surely would have been there too. Five year-olds are not immune to the clutches of ice. They are not yet as educated as their parents and older friends, so they are sometimes easy prey to its slippery pitfalls. \nCabbageheads are a hearty bunch. We're well aware of the dangers of ice. We prepared; armed with information and the tools needed to thwart its effects. Mostly we just stayed away from the evil ice. Kinda like Henry Chinaski in the 1987 movie \"Barfly\" (an adaptation of the Charles Bukowski screed). Another character in the film –Wanda – said to Henry \"Don't you hate cops?\" Henry responded \"No, butI seem to feel better when they're not around.\" \nWe're not talking about the cops here, of course. We're talking about ice. But you get the idea, right? \nFor some ofus, ice is kinda like a rumoryou didn’t believe until you stepped outside and felt the ground betrayyou. The nooksand crannies of streets and sidewalks you've memorized – they suddenly forgot themselves. Magnolias on Tennelle bowed \nICE NOT WELCOME \nHERE \nBy Kyle F. Bidlack \nPhoto by Susan Bogan Nelson \nslightly under crystal weight. Power lines hummed like nervous violins. But, predictably, Cabbagetown fared well in its bout with ice. In fact, we're all the stronger for it. On Saturday morn, the 'hood moved at a shared pace – slow, careful, human. Folks who’d never learned each other’s names traded salt and coffee. \nBy 2p, the temps had warmed to forty degrees and a cold, steady rain began to fall. Ice tried to defy the forces of nature, tried to stick around, but nature and Cabbagetown don't like things that don't bend. The ice melted away without saying goodbye and no one waved. \nBy nightfall, Carroll Street was once again aglow. Laughter drifted across porches, taverns, and bistros. Stories were shared. Names were learned. Cabbagetown, only ever so slightly bruised but breathing strong, held itself together the way it always does – not by standing rigid in the cold, but by leaning toward one another until the weight passed. \nAnd when the ice was gone, what remained was clear: some forces freeze a place, make it brittle and afraid. Others thaw it, slow and steady, until life can move again. \nCabbagetown knows which forces itprefers. \nPage 2 • Cabbagetown Neighbor • February 2026 \nCabbagetown Neighbor is a monthly newspaper produced by the Cabbagetown Neighborhood Improvement Association (CNIA), anon-profit organization.
