homeroom.Discipline isthe fine art of being able to learn—of being a disciple. The man who canbe taught has disciplined himself.Theloudmouthed idiot hasn't.Disciplineis something that comes from inside aperson, not from outside.Unfortu-nately,when we speak of it we usuallymean“enforced discipline,\"and that'sthe degradation of a very fine word. \nYou've probably seen the televisionshow“Youth Wants to Know.”Thekids who appear on it are quite brainy. They are representative,if not of allmodern youth,at least of the typemost likely to \"want to know.\" \n# SOMEONE ALWAYS IN CHARGE\n\nYouth wants to know many things, but“Who's in charge here?”isn't oneof them.Someone, however,is alwaysin charge. That's authority. There'snothing wrong with this—but it canbe aggravating, because it works allthe time. \n# JESUS:\n\nFrom the gospels we learn that onething that drew the crowds to Jesuswas that He spoke with authority.More than that,He acted with au-thority.But that doesn't mean thatHe bossed people around! That wasthe last thing the poor peasants fromPalestine needed. The Romans toldthem what to do;the rich landownerstold them what to do;the religiousleaders told them what to do.Theyall spoke in firm, hard tones,demand-ing enforced discipline. \n# LORD&\n\nPsychologists say that young peoplehave all sorts of needs, wants anddrives. It doesn't seem,though,thatthe\"will to be bossed\"is one of them. \n# CHRIST\n\nIs this the case?Is authority a “painin the neck”?Before we give a snapanswer,we need to consider three sep-arate,yet related, terms. One is an-archy,another is authority and thethird is discipline. \nsweet smile:\"“Go out and play in traf-fic.”That's the spirit of anarchy:nobosses,no rules—and no protection. And why?Because no one cares. \n# AUTHORITY HAS THE SAY\n\nANARCHY MEANS NO BOSS \nAuthority is a different matter.Youknow what it is without needing adefinition:Authority is the voice ofsomeone who knows or who has thesay in things. When the people whohave the say, also happen to know, itmakes things much easier.Servingunder authority is hard for all of us.But when authority is both intelligentand kind, obeying it is less of a chore. \n\"AUTHORITY”WAS GOD'S POWER \nAnarchy is the state of things whenthere's no one in charge. That's exact-ly what the word means in Greek:\"no boss.\"Mutiny at sea, rebellionon land, bedlam in the school bus:allhave the one thing in common ---totallack of authority.Nobody thinking, nobody calling the plays;everybodyshouting. Are they happy?Yes,prob-ably--the way small children and in-sane people are happy when they'relet loose. There's a sick joke in whicha mother says to her children, with a \nConsequently,any teacher who camealong and said,“This is really it,”wasn't going to attract a crowd veryeasily. But we miss the force of thegospel word“authority”entirely,if wethink that all it meant was a firm tonein Jesus'voice,a piercing eye and aconviction that He was a true teachersent from God. \n# DISCIPLINE MAKES DISCIPLES\n\nNo,\"authority\"was an old religiousword that the Jews had been usingfor centuries. It didn't mean any \nDiscipline is perhaps the hardest ofthe three to define. It doesn't mean \nThe AuthorityThe Authority2HI-TIME \nhuman way of acting, but the power ofGod Himself. That is exactly what thecrowds thought they saw in Jesus ofNazareth—Divine power. And oh,how they longed for it! \nThey had been without a trueprophet for more than four hundredyears. They thought the heavens wereclosed against them. The Lord hadvisited His people in Moses’time, when He led them out of Egypt byHis mighty outstretched arm.Cen-turies later He set them free from asecond captivity, this time in Babylon. But that was now more than five hun-dred years ago.Persians,Greeks,Romans —everyone
