I threw all of myself into everything I did, and that included my slowly-growing business empire. As such, we all needed our rest.  \nSomething one of our number seemed stubbornly determined to ignore.  \n“You have to stop pushing yourself, Liang,” Danielle said exasperatedly to the blind woman perched on the couch, who was wearing a decidedly pouty expression.  \nPart of me was almost amused to see that look on Liang’s face. She’d initially come off as almost painfully reserved and polite, and I’d struggled to get a sense of the real woman beneath the formality, save for a gentle serenity and her quiet, piercing wisdom.  \nThose I had both attributed, at least in part, to the fact she was a seer , who was able to perceive things no other creature, not even a dragon like myself, could imagine.  \nBut now, after close to a month living with us in Danielle’s mansionlike house, she was beginning to open up. Slowly but surely, we were all beginning to see the real Liang under the thick layer of stiff, formal reserve the Crimson 88--her former keepers and, until recently, the closest thingshe’d ever had to a family--had instilled in her.  \nThere was, after all, an expectation with the term ‘seer.’ Something old and grand and knowing. Scrape that all away, and there was a young woman in her mid-twenties underneath.  \nA young woman who was evidently prone to pouting when she was being scolded.  \n“If I don’t push myself, we’ll never make progress,” she argued asthe blonde woman came to sit down beside her on the couch.  \nDanielle’s posture was exasperated, but given Liang couldn’t see it, at least not in the traditional sense, emotions had to be conveyed through  \nsound and movement, such as the sensation of someone flopping down on the couch next to you.  \n“It’s not about progress,” the blonde woman sighed.  \n“It is,” Liang countered.“We know we have a time limit to figure this out, and I’m our best shot at that. Unless we want to wait and hope for someone or something convenient to fall out of a portal.”  \nShe did, admittedly, have a point there. My ongoing struggle against Astrum’s power had hit a new fever pitch with the arrival ofAethelind, a fellow dragon who’d infiltrated Coilfell’s Royal Court to learn more about what the dastardly mage was planning.  \nWhich was, in a word, cages. Cages for magical creatures like her and me, designed to siphon our magic and use it to power a portal so large I hadn’t even been sure it was possible.  \nPortals were unstable magic, a literal hole in the fabric of reality punching through the barriers between one world and the next like a wound. They could not stay open for long and required an immense amount of power and skill to create.  \nBut using the magic of dragons, as well as other powerful magical creatures, would theoretically allow Astrum to banish all magical creatures from Coilfell to Earth, which was essentially a larger-scale version of what he’d done to me a few months ago.  \nI had no issue with my life on Earth.
