Throughout the BTEC Tech Award learners will learn theory while also developing practical skills, such as using tools and materials safely with vocationally correct techniques, interpreting and understanding the requirements for safe and efficient work, and specialist design techniques. This is reflected in the engaging internal task-based assessments, in which learners have the opportunity to apply and develop hand skills, express creativity and put learning into practice in a useful way, solving construction-related problems . In addition, learners will develop key skills such as planning work, interpreting technical information, designing to meet a client brief, and measuring and checking the quality of work completed.
This BTEC Tech Award complements the learning in GCSE programmes such as GCSE Design and Technology by teaching additional and specific skills in design for construction as well as practical skills in either brickwork or carpentry and joinery. It allows for more applied study when looking atthe different types of technologies used in a real-world setting for low-rise construction.
On completion of this course, learners could progress directly into a trainee-or apprenticeship, or to technician-level qualifications. The content of this award introduces topics covered in more depth in the BTEC National and T Levels in Construction, giving learners a head-start at Level 3.
Assessment overview
Components are interrelated and best seen as part of an integrated whole rather than as distinct study areas.

| Component | GLH | Qualification
weighting | Marks
available | Type of
assessment | Length of
assessment | Availability |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Component 1:
Construction Technology | 48 | 40% | 60 | External
exam.
Externally marked | 1 hour and 20 minutes | Twice a year in Jan / Feb and May / June (from 2024) |
| Component 2:
Construction in Practice | 36 | 30% |
60 | Internal
assessment
(PSA*) with
3 tasks.
Externally
moderated | 8 hours of
supervised
sessions | Twice a year: June release for December/ January moderation September release for May/June moderation |
| Component 3: Construction and Design | 36 | 30% | 60 | Internal
synoptic assessment (PSA*) .
