Whether you’re a learner or supporting one as a parent or carer, this guide explains how BTEC qualifications are assessed, how final grades are awarded, and where to find support and answers to common questions.

| | Contents |
| --- | --- |

How BTECs are assessed 02
How BTECs are awarded 03
Grades and grade boundaries 04
Certificates 05
University applications 05
Appeals and further support 06
Further information 07
How BTEC qualifications grades are assessed
Our goal is to ensure every learner receives a fair and consistent result. Following the return to normal assessment and grading in 2023, Ofqual has confirmed that the same arrangements will continue forA levels, AS levels and GCSEs, as well as for vocational qualifications.
BTEC results will therefore be awarded in line with the performance standards established in 2024, providing consistency from one year to the next.

| Key results dates
This year, the key dates relating to the issuing of results are as follows:

BTEC Nationals | |
| --- | --- |
| 13 August | ASA level, AEA, Edexcel Award Level 3, Project Level 3, Mathematics in Context, T Levels Technical Qualifications |
|
BTEC Firsts, Technicals and Tech Awards | |
| 20 August | GCSE, International GCSE, Project Level 1 and 2, Edexcel Award Level 1 and 2, ELC |

How BTEC qualifications results are decided
BTEC qualifications are designed differently from GCSEs andA levels, so they’reassessed differently too.
Instead of relying on final exams alone, BTEC qualifications are made up of individual units that are assessed either internally or externally throughout your course. By contrast, GCSEs andA levels are linear qualifications, with most assessment taking place atthe end of the course. Because BTECs are structured differently, the way your final qualification grade is calculated is also different. The next page explains how BTEC qualification grades are awarded and what you can expect when you receive your results.
How BTEC qualifications grades are awarded
For Level 3 BTEC Nationals, for example, most qualifications are made up of around 60% of internally assessed units which are assessed by you and quality assured by Pearson. External assessments (usually around 40% of the qualification) are set, marked and awarded by Pearson.

| BTEC qualifications
To award a result, the following stages must be completed: | | | | | | |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
|
1
The learner must be registered for the course | |
2
Their school or college must submit their grades for internally assessed units | |
3
The learner must have received a grade for externally assessed units | |
4
Their school or college must have submitted a claim for their qualification |
|
Without all this information, we are unable to award a result | | | | | | |
| | | | | | | |

Because BTEC qualifications are flexible and made up of individual units, they can be completed over more than one academic year, in many different variations. Each unit you complete receives its own grade and points score, which can be carried forward as you progress through your qualification .
Once we’ve received all the required assessment information, we calculate your final qualification grade by calculating the points you have achieved in each unit, adding these together to give you an overall points score, and converting these points to an overall qualification grade.
The diagram below shows an example of a learner completes a BTEC Level 3 National Diploma (720), includingthe units that make up the qualification as well as","cbCaijlBLDL2gK1m","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijlBLDL2gK1m","pdf",611611,"English","# How BTECs are assessed
# How BTECs are awarded
# Grades and grade boundaries
# Certificates
# University applications
# Appeals and further support
# Further information","[{"question":"How are BTEC qualifications assessed?","answer":"BTEC qualifications are assessed through individual units, which are marked internally or externally during the course.
